This is for a winter project vintage 400cc(max) class flattracker that I'll race locally. Considering engine weight, which would you use?

A - an xl250 motor bored and stroked to 347cc's

OR

B - an xl350 motor bored out to just under 400cc's

Just looking for thoughts before I start modifying motor mounts on a project frame. (or do xl250 and 350 motors mount identically?)

Thanks for any thoughts on the subject!

Kyle, The 250 and 350 have the same motor mounts. Pat.

Thanks Pat, I mocked up an x250 motor and it looks like it will barely fit in a Pursang frame. I may have to move the engine cradle a little lower to line up the counterchaft sprocket and swingarm pivot a little better. If I do that then a 350 would probably fit in there too.

Its amazing how close the Pursang frame geometry is to the Baker frame, I hope it handles as well...

Kyle, I believe the 350 engine is a bit taller, so take that into consideration as well.

Kyle,

I believe that Pat has some 89mm pistons that will fit the 250 crank and give a 360cc engine with just a very big bore job.  What kind of racing are you looking at doing?  This would require a 350 head to make it work right bacause the 250 valves are just too small for a big high rpm engine.  Also an option is a DR350 piston, which has the same piston pin size as the XL250 at 19mm and they come up to 89.5mm in big bore kits.  However, they are a flattop piston and I am not sure of the pin to piston top height.  A phone call to the sellers should get you the right height to see if it will work.  With a custom 6mm stroker this would put you right at the 400cc size limit that you spoke of.

How radical do you want to go?
