I hope this is not a repost, but I would like to change the oil on my 73 XL250.
I'm going to run 10W-40 motorcycle oil.

3 easy questions.
-Is the oil filter replaceable, or is it a metal screen that you clean.  Where is it located on the bike?
-How many litres of oil should I be putting in?
-Is 10w-40 the best viscosity?

Thanks kindly, and sorry if these question's sound silly!

There are two types of filters on your bike. There is an oil pump filter screen located under the large nut on the right side crankcase cover. Just behind the rear break lever. I think there is a spring in there so be careful. There is also an oil filter rotor behind right side cover. You'll need to remove the kick start lever and the break lever to take the cover off.You will see a little cup just to the right of the clutch, thats the oil slinger. Remove the snap ring and remove the filter cover. I leaned my bike over and scraped out all the junk with an old tooth brush and then rinsed it with brake cleaner. You'll need a new side cover gasket. I have found complete engine gasket kits on e-bay for around $40 or so.
10w-40 is a universal weight oil. It will be fine. I use Honda HP4 synthetic blend. The bike takes 1.9 U.S. qts or 1.8 liters.

You should pick up a Clymers Manual. You can find them on Amazon for around $30.

Thanks guys.

Greatly appreciated. How often should I clean out the oil filter rotor? Every 2nd or 3rd oil change?

Is the Clymers Manual any good?  I've always thought they were to generic, and did not cover a specific model enough.  I can only seem to find them for the XL back to 1978, but mine is a 73.

I found this on ebay, looks like OEM...?

Does anyone have this one?

Thanks kindly,

This is the Clymers I have, I have a 72XL. It does cover the XL 100 through 350's, but it has detailed info for each model. I've never seen a shop manual, but I sure it has all the information you would need, although I'm not sure if it would have maintenance schedules.

http://www.amazon.com/Honda-100-350Cc-Singles-1969-1982-M315/dp/0892871849/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1216937873&sr=11-1

My original owners manual says to clean the oil every 1500 miles, I would change it sooner than that, the filter screen every 6000 miles, and does not list oil rotor maintenance. Clymers suggests every 6000 miles for the rotor.

I've heard cam wear is a big issue on these bikes, and frequent oil changes are a must.
My oil filter had some gunk on it, looked like rubber gasket'ish stuff, so i'm definatly going to clean out the oil filter rotor as well, becuase there might be junk in there too.  I'll then run some regular 10-40 dino through it, and then probably switch to synthetic.
Take care,

I dont have any brake cleaner on me, so I used a bit of carb cleaner.  Is this ok to use?  It seems to clean the oil away very good.
