When cold, XL500S starts with choke on and 2-3 kicks. I have to play with the choke to keep it from revving up too much and when I reduce the choke, it'll give a periodic "cough" through the air cleaner, and it sometimes dies. Once warm though, no problems. Does anyone know what can cause this?

RE:Why does my XL cough only when it's cold?

My xl350r does the same thing because its way to lean on the pilot jet (when its idiling) Its almost imposible to start the thing even with the choke. Its so bad I usally have to turn the idle up to get the bike to start and let it warm up before I turn it back down. Is your bike all stock, aftermartket pipe or opened up airbox?

I have a SuperTrapp exhaust, otherwise stock. I recently dismantled and cleaned the carburetor, made a small float adjustment, and set the mixture jet 2 turns out per the book. After it is reassembled, there is a metal tab on the jet that can be turned by hand but only 1/4 turn in each direction before stopping on the carb bowl body. I am guessing for altitude adjustment. The air box appears stock, and has some leaks where old silicone is around some of the seams, but I can't see that being part of the problem. Don't know.

I think if you went up a size on your pilot jet it would fix the problem. I dont know if they are pressed in that carb though they may be. That adjustment tab ive read can be broken off with a screwdriver and has a screw under it that can then be turned but I have never done this.
