I just recently purchased a Honda XL 100. http://orlando.craigslist.org/mcy/759755341.html. The guy swore it was a 1974, he owned a bike shop and all. But even with my very little bike knowledge.. to me it looks just like the 1975. Its important because the manuals are completly different. I also dont want to buy parts for a 1974 when i need the 1975. The web does no good with old vin numbers so i couldnt check it out. Any help? Thanks

Does it not have a vin tag on the frame?

Welcome aboard, Willix.  I saw that ad on craigslist, too.  I live in NE Orlando, over near Oviedo.

I had a 1975 XL100 in about 1985, and it had that exact color scheme.  Burgundy metallic tank with two black stripes down the center of the tank.  I would've bet money that it was a '75.

Plus, there IS a website that lists engine serial numbers and what numbers came in what year.  I'll hunt it out and post it.

Here it is:  www.motorera.com/honda/index.htm

*edit*  yep, in looking at the photos on the above site, yours is a 75.  The 75 had those 'scooped' fenders, particularly the front.  The 74 had more 'flat' fenders, similar to the previous SL100 model.

But, as Woosh asks:  what about a VIN tag on the neck?  doesn't it give a manufacture date?

Any help is appreciated.

AFAIK:

XL100 1000001 = 74
XL100 1100001 = 75
XL100 1200001 = 76

etc.

So, yours would be a '75.  Does it have a title?  Does the title say '75?  But, then, from a replacement parts perspective, I guess you want to know what Honda considers it rather than what the state considers it.

Either way, have fun with it.
