Hi Everyone,

For the last couple of years, I have been building an SL125/145 AHRMA racer.  The engine has a Powroll Stroked Crank, Cam, and Cam springs, as well as a Keihin 26mm carb from a honda hawk, a Hooker Header pipe and a CL100 transmission.  Here's my problem,  I have a strange noise that is coming out of the top end.  I took it to a mechanic who said that it was cam chain noise and that I should tighten the cam chain adjuster.  Well I did this, and subsequently bent a valve (I don't think that this is what caused this).  I installed new valves, and used Powroll valve springs.  There was no damage to the piston or crank (I had it checked).  The cam chain sprocket on the crank was replaced since it was now spinning on the shaft.  I bought a new cam chain, cam sprocket as well as the cam chain guide (the one that is adjusted for chain play) but the chain guide (the non adjustable side) is the original but shows little to no wear.  I put the engine back together again, but it has the same noise.  You can hear it when the engine is decellerating and while idling.  Tightening the cam chain adjuster does nothing to the noise.  I did not change the rocker arms or rocker shafts.  Could this noise be tappet noise.  I am running a total loss ignition system, the stator flywheel is in place, but the magnets on the stator itself has been removed except for the part that holds the cam chain adjuster thing in place.  It is on it's 1st overbore, with an aftermarket skirted piston to clear the stroked crank.  I got the piston from a guy on Ebay, that sells aftermarket honda stuff.  What am I missing?  Can anyone help me?

Other things on this bike are:
Early model xr75 gas tank, XL250 front forks and wheel, XL125 swingarm (2 inches longer), Honda MR175 rear wheel, and '74 CR125 Elsinore shocks.  I will try to send a picture to be posted on the other part of this XL board.

Thanks....DSK

I thought cam chain noise generally got worse the faster the engine was spinning cause there is more centrifigal force on the chain.

Pull the rockers and check for wear especially the rocker to shaft clearance, they may be out of tolerence and causing your noise, have you had to adjust the lash on them frequently. Other than what you have checked thats the only thing I can suggest to check out.

Problem solved.  Because of the lift and duration of the cam I was using, the valved were hitting each other very slightly.  Unfortunately, I have gone through three sets of valves figuring this out.  I finally sent the head to a guy named Terry Miller in Oregon, who works closely with Powroll and he did the work for me.  If anyone is looking to create an SL100 or SL125 racer and will be using any Powroll products, I would highly suggest contacting him.  Terry is great to talk to.  He did a valve job as well as ported my head.  I will be assembling it this weekend.
