Hi,
I have a 71 SL125 that I have set up for AHRMA racing.  The engine has been set up with a Powroll Stoked Crank, Powroll cam, clutch springs CL100 transmission, and a total loss ignition.  Shortly after I assembled it, it had a lot of cam chain noise.  And then bent a valve.  It has been sitting on my bench since last July out of frustration.  I am getting ready to rebuild it, and just ordered some cam springs from Powroll yesterday.  Here's my question, the person a powroll said that it is possible that I have too much play in the cam bearing surfaces within the head.  I tried to measure the amount of play and I have come up with about .005 to .010 in. movement side to side.  Is this too loose?  Also, I noticed that where the cam fits into the head, the bearing surface is smooth, but the surface that is perpendicular to it, is not.  That surface, where the cam rests against is smooth, but where the oil hole is, and where the cam is hollow, is where it is pitted or atleast very unfinished looking.  Is this normal?  Since that area of the cam is hollow, I can't figure out what would have caused this kind of surface appearance.

Thanks,
DSK

Well, no one has answered this question so I will start some discussion on it.  Your measurement of between .005" - .010" is quite a bit of difference.  Where are you measuring this clearance?  Are you using movement of the end of the cam or using Plastiguage to check the clearance?

Having just rebuilt 2 piece top end I believe the diffrences you talk about are where the machining is made on the cast to fit the cam direct, the hole is an oilway to feed the surfaces.I havent the expertise to fit bearings so the valve train is still quite noisey but the clearances on the valves seem to hold quite well at the upper rev range. This design seems to be a weak point on a very lively little engine, which is a shame really as it sounds great now the rings seal tight, just rattles a lot on idle.
