1975 Honda XL 100. Latly its been extreamly hard to get the bike started. I have to adjust the idle on the carb to extreams and kick it for a while till it slowly sounds better and eventually starts. After that it runs perfectly fine. It will kick after one or two kicks and run perfect. Then i let it sit and next day same thing. I thought it was a fouled plug but i dont know anymore. I was reading that i should try it with the choke open. Any suggestions?

Hmmm.... maybe need a few more details on your starting procedure.  Are you adjusting the idle MIXTURE screw?  or the idle SPEED screw?  As you say, you shouldn't need to do either.  Perhaps running a bit of SeaFoam mixed in with the gasoline for a tank or two might help clean the carb inside.

However - my own 73 CL100 needs full choke when cold for the first kick or two, then backed off when it fires.  One thing that has a BIG effect on my bike is the battery charge.  I think my battery is shot so it goes dead after a day or two of not riding.  I need to put it on the charger for a half hour before I go to start it, and it makes a huge difference.  All the rest of that day the bike will restart easy, but after a few days, it needs to go back on the charger before starting.

Good luck with it,

Kirk

Thanks KirkN i appreciate the response. I am adjusting the top screw thats outfarther, i assumed it was the idle scre. As for the Mixture screw i havent touched that.

As for my startup procedure. I kick it hard, snap off the clutch and give it throtle. I havent tryed using the choke up, i thought it was like a lawn mower where you just flip it up and down real quick haha. So i should be flipping it up, kicking it till it starts, than flip it down and ride?

I thought it was maybe the battery because when i first start the bike the headlight fades in and out. Also the blinkers take a few seconds to go on after i flip them.

I'm new to bikes and not to sure what a good idle speed should sound like, any tips on that?

Make sure the battery is fully charged.  If you have any dash lights working, the neutral light should show green when you turn on the key.

When engine is cold, go with full choke and just a crack of throttle until it starts.  Then, slowly back off the choke, while playing with the throttle, as the engine warms up.  Shut the choke off whenever the engine runs cleanly without it.

As for idle speed, it should be around 1000 - 1200 rpm.  Basically, when the engine is warmed up, back the idle speed screw out (dropping the rpms) until the engine doesn't want to idle by itself, then go back a bit with the screw.  That should do.

I'll try that later today. I'm also going to grab some SeaFoam, should i put some in the carb throat as well as the gas tank?

Started up perfectly with choke. had to not use the throttle, but it worked like a charm. I'm going to use SeaFoam. Thanks for the help on that.

Now, i stripped some of the metal down because it was a bit rusty, now whenever it rains it gets rust almost the next day. If i put some turtle wax on it every few weeks will it prevent this? I dont want to paint it right now and dont want to scrape it every day.

Whats the difference between the idle MIXTURE screw?  and the idle SPEED screw?

An idle mixture screw adjusts the air/fuel mixture that goes through the carb at idle with the throttle closed or just slightly open.  The idle speed screw adjusts the height of the slide which controls how much air/fuel can get into the engine past the slide when you close the throttle.  There is always just a little crack between the bottom of the slide and the carb bore so that the engine can get some air to run with.  If you back off the idle speed screw all the way then the slide closes and the engine can't run at all.
