I have a 1971 SL100 that I want to use as a pit bike. I don't need lights or anything except for the engine to run. I saw the post about removing wires from the stator but I don't need anything left in there. Can I change over to a XR100 alternator and use an AC coil? Will the XR parts bolt op to the crank & case. Is there a better way to have a non battery motor? Thanks GeneB

Don't know about the XR stuff but can't you just install a later model stator assembly from  like a '75 or so XL 100 or 125? Swiss would know. Bruce

I have heard an XL will work, but I don't understand why. Doesn't the XL have lights & battery just like the SL & CL? If so then why would it work without a battery & not the SL. Lots of mystery in the stator/rotor vs alternator concept for me

I have never directly compared the wiring diagrams for the older SL/CL100-125 engines with the slightly newer XL125 and XL100.  I do know that the early bikes required the battery for ignition, and the later XL125 did not.  i converted my SL125 over to the XL rotor/stator when them became available.  You COULD fix the timing and run the early system with a fixed advance, but that would be more suitable for racing use only.  I don't know when the 100s went to the non-battery magneto, just that the XL125 had it when they brought it out.

I have ~4 SL/CB 125 and 100 engines laying around and AFAIK they all use battery vs. 'exciter' coil like the XLs. Could be none are newer then ~1972.

*BUT* my SL125 came to me w/o a battery and hot wired. All they did was strip some wire off the hot lead going to the lights and splice the coil wire onto that.

I don't have an SL125 schematic and the SL has since been rewired/new engine.

The battery in a stock SL works as a load resistance to protect the system from over voltage and I figure the wiring the coil into the lights performed a similar function with the bulb acting as a load.

Anyway, I would suggest you try running a wire from the positive terminal of the battery to the coil and seeing if you get a spark. If you do get a spark and the motor runs, use a DVM to check for how much voltage is appearing at the coil. If the voltage is excessive, just wire a ~10 watt 2 Ohm resistor in series.

If you don't get a spark with the battery charging circuit you may want to try it with the lighting circuit. Same problem and solution if there is an over voltage problem.

so if i bought a 77 XL125 stator and rotor and put them on my CL125 i dont need a battery and the lights will still work?

Does anyone have a 1976 XL125 schematic that they can scan and send me?
