I'm trying to figure out if I can ditch the battery on a sl125 I have. Got the bike a few years ago and finally got around to start it up. I was going to sell it but had so much fun riding around the yard that i'm keeping it. I put in a new battery, plug & points.........cleaned the carb and it fired right up. Its set-up for dirt riding(no lights at all). Read somewhere about using a xl stator? I have a parts '77 bottom end if that works. Any ideas?

RE:Running without a battery on a sl125?

Hey, Smoky,  welcome aboard!  Always nice to have another member here.

Yes, it can be (relatively) easily done.  I don't remember all the details myself, but Search thru this forum (SL's) and search thru the XL125 forum.  There was recently a good write-up on how to do it.

It can be done with all the stock components.  Essentially, you lock the mechanical advance in a fixed place, then, reposition the flywheel on the end of the crankshaft (without the key).  The details are in that other write-up.

*edit*  Well, I just looked.  It's right here in the SL forums:  How to change an SL100 to no battery ignition.  DirtHippie did it and wrote it up.

Good luck with it, and have fun with your SL

Kirk

Thanks! Looks like a lot of good SL info. here.

I may do that if I can't use the XL stuff. I already cut up the wiring harness to make thing simple. Maybe one day I can do some vintage racing.
