Yep, it's a (relatively) easy deal to change and no, it doesn't require splitting the cases. The shifter bits you're interested in live under the clutch cover, below and behind the clutch itself. The cover will need to come off, and probably the centrifugal oil filter and the clutch itself, too, just to make access a little easier. All of it just unbolts. Only one special tool is required - the castellated nut driver thing to remove the oil filter nut. MotionPro sells it for, like, 10 bucks.      Good luck with it.
