I am a new owner of a 1984 xl350r.  It has devoloped a significant clack (almost a metalic slapping noise) when it warms up.  I thought it was a valve adjustment issue, so I adjusted the valves last weekend.  It still has the noise.  I notice it most when the engine is warm and at idle.  I can't tell if the noise is coming from the valves or somewhere else.  I know these RFVC engines are typically noisy, but this seems to be excessive.  Any thoughts???

When I got mine it made the valve noise but I to figured an adjustment would fix the problem. I was very wrong. The cam and rockers were so worn that even after being adjusted properly there was still way to much slack and they made lots of noise. I replaced the rockers and cover and cam with stuff from an xr and it is much quiter but still makes a lot of noise epecially at higher rpms. I am not sure if that is normal or not. I did take the cam chain tensionor off the bike cause I dropped the pin that holds the compresion realease lever in the cover. It fell down the hole the cam chain goes thru. I got it but was very worried I was gonna lose it so be carefull. The tensionor was a pain to put back in and I dont know that I did it right I may have a loose chain.
