Question: I have 1983 XL600R. How hard is it to  put these plastic shields from newer bike onto it to direct air to engine?

Question: Is there any downside (theoretical or actual, from experience) to removal of the fine mesh screen in the air box? I know it is supposed to prevent a flashback onto the filter. I went to remove it but the airbox does not disassemble so it would have to be cut out and I am reluctant to permanently remove it if it serves a useful function.
