I plan to use my '83 xl600r on the street quite a bit and I'm just wondering if anyone else has and if they suggest any mods. Also wondering what size sprockets to use, I'm not planning to use it on the interstate alot but I'd like to be able to do it occasionally. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I ride mine to and from work but it's only about a 14 or 15 mile round trip and all surface streets. I've run it on the freeway and it seems comfortable at 65-70mph. I run the stock gearing. The first and most important modification you need to do is jet the carburetors and install a free flowing aftermarket muffler. These bikes are jetted super lean from the factory and as such run hot. You will prolong the life of your engine and get the added bonus of more power. We all want that, right? I'm currently rebuilding my engine and will be chronicling my progress under the" XL 600" title in this forum. Hope this helps. Bruce

Mine currently has a 43 tooth rear sprocket and I'm not sure what it has on front. What was stock on a 83 xl600 ? Do you have any preference on aftermarket pipes ? Also, I have a spare stock exhaust system and I'm a good welder, any mod's I can make to a stock muffler or head pipe to avoid laying out cash for an after market muffler ?

I use mine when i'm working in London, it's great for getting through the traffic and no congestion charge either. The only thing i find is it gets a little hot when stopped in traffic, i'm looking at installing a cooler at the moment.
