I've been lurking around here and there for a while and I get the impression that oil is important to my bike. I bought this bike from the original owner who put Mobile 1 in it on day one and has kept the same oil ever since, (it has 7K miles on it). Is this stuff OK? I've found several references to clutch plate damage when using the wrong oil.
Oil temperature also seems to be important and a cooler would seem to be a natural thing to add on. Has anybody ever put on one of those semi-circle ones from an XR400? I haven't looked into the idea much but that cooler looks like a neat design.

I don't have any experience with Mobile 1 so I really can't comment there. I've always run Honda four stroke oil with no problems. I've seen other people install those oil coolers on different bikes but not on an XL600R, that I can remember anyhow. I think that could be a beneficial addition to your bike. You should try it! Document it on here. That would be cool.  Oh, and
