It is my understanding that top end components of the mid 80's RFVC XL/XR motors are interchangeable. Is this true or not? I am rebuilding an 84-87 XL 250R that was missing the entire top end when I got it and I am shopping replacement components and don't want to purchase anything that I can't use. The fact that some pieces are black and some are red is not an issue as long as they bolt together and work.
Thanks

I discovered from a knowledgable person (more than I) that the Xl and XR have different bore size though I'm not sure what model years that is the case. How many years were the RFVC 250 motor made?
My personal opinion is the original XL 250 motors were great and later "improvements" were largely efforts to keep engineers employed and busy.
The RFVC thing was largely an engineering exercise without much merit other than proving it could be done.
Even now where most all others are doing the straight DOHC set-ups Honda has to push the odd Uni-Cam just to be different. Just an opinion.

Honda did a 250 dohc it was I believe the nx250 and other countries had the xl250 degree it was also a dohc. I personally love the rfvc engines they can be more trouble than the earlier motors but they had there problems to. The stock 84xl350r has 56mm worth of carb at full open throttle cause its got two carbs. Try and put a single carb that big on there and it wont work so well. I also dont think honda does a whole lot to be different I think the uni cam is cheaper and thats why they do it. Thats why anyone does anything any more $$$$$.
