Looks like it could be the plug out of the end of the countershaft. If it is, you really need to replace it as I believe there's oil pressure behind it.

I purchased a Non-op '83 xr350r just to break down the motor. Have yet to split the case but so far have found nothing similiar. Just met another xl350r('85) owner that found the same plug in his oil. He never found out what or where. Said the xlperformance guy did know and has 40 years experience. Newest idea is it's from the netrual switch. The XR I'm exploering doesn't have one. Anybody have a netrual switch they could look at?

That is a plug normally used in the end of a transmission or other hollow steel shaft. Maybe crankpin? Like Bruce said it was put in for a purpose, to hold oil pressure in. Find where it goes and replace. Check end of mainshaft under the clutch. Pat Orman.
