Topic :   Improving the lights - 74 xl250 motorsport

Winter is well and truly here in the UK, and with it comes darkness at 4pm. Having finally got my old xl in good shape and road legal, a ride home last night nearly saw me doing some unintensional 'off road' riding.
Any ideas on how I can improve the headlight? Is a 12volt conversion possible or can I just stick a bigger wattage lamp in?

Topic :   Wanted XL500 or 600

Looking for a complete XL500 or 600.  Would rather it be mostly complete, with a clean title and running even if not great.

Preference is for a model year 79 XL500 or an 86 XL600 with the gold wheels.

Re :   Rear tire Size

On the old front - The bike I have now (76) I thought was sooooo cool when it came out. I desperately wanted one, but at age 13 my dad picked up a 68 Bultaco matador for me. I hated the way it looked, but loved having my first bike. I wished I still had that old Bultaco. Now it's cool. sigh.
I do some volunteer work with some guys, most of whom are 19-20. One of them caught the old bike bug and got a 77 CB550 and is restoring it. I feel like I've passed on the legacy. :)

My son (10) has a restored 72 SL100 and enjoys it but is always looking over the fence at the newer stuff. We went riding in one of the off-road areas over the summer and after keeping up with all the hot shots all day on his 'ancient' bike, he announced at the end of the day, "mine looks totally different and theirs look all the same, and gee dad, you were right, mine is just as good, or even better than theirs!"

Old is good. :)

I love the 'we don't do old' reply I get when I go into shops. The work around I found is to skip any of the sales people who are under 40. Go straight for the old guy, who tends to know his stuff. I have a Honda guy in my town that still has every part number still in his head for every bike for the last 40 years. He knows what fits!
Good luck with the tire.

Ha! Almost makes me feel as though I might still be good for something!

Way old @ 55......................... Dennis. Hell, I was 'ridin dirt bikes before you were even born!  LOL.

Re :   Standard BHP for XL250 S

Thanks to everyone for their responses
I have 32mm Amal carb lined up and a bespoke exhaust.
New Cam and Piston will probably be phase 2 of the project once eveything appears to be running sweet

Re :   How to change SL100 to no battery ignition

Or you could buy one of  Rex Caunts - Honda CB100/125 Race Type Ignition System, I have just fitted 1 ,very simple and noticable increase in revs and it will near start with half a kick.

Re :   Rear tire Size

I'm not sure there is anyone there that is over 40.  I found a place called "The Hawg Shop" that has done a little bit of work for me.  They are a bunch of laid back guys with motorcycles everywhere.  So next time I'm in need I'll talk to them.  As for my this time with my tires, after talking with the jcmotors guy again, I decided to go with some IRC GP110's on front and rear.  I'll be mostly on the road but hope to at least hit some trails again... one of these days.  Hopefully they are on their way and some new tubes are coming with them.  At first I was going to use my old tubes but figure 11 bucks is definitely worth keeping me from having to pull my tire off again sooner rather than later just to replace an old tube.  I think I got a pretty good deal on them.. about $130 for tires, tubes, and shipping.  He gave me a discount because I had ordered some different tires a couple of weeks ago that they said they had but apparently didn't.

Re :   Standard BHP for XL250 S

So taking the average of all of the numbers suggested above:  17, 18.15, 20, 24 gets you 19.8 hp.  Go with that!!  Or take it down to get it dyno'ed and report back here.

Re :   Standard BHP for XL250 S

I have an old Motorcyclist magazine [April 1979] with a test on the XL250S. On their dyno it made 18.15 RWHP, it doesn't say what Honda rated it at the crank. Hope that helps.

Re :   Standard BHP for XL250 S

I don't know what stock hp was on those motors but a carb, pipe, piston and cam will put them over 30hp. Sponsered a young man on one in 1983 for flattracking as a novice. He got midwest novice high points and IMDA series high points on it against all 250 2smokes. They work really good for ice racing also. Pat Orman.

Re :   Standard BHP for XL250 S

Yes conflicting information is everywhere!!

I have read various figures from 17bhp on bikez.com to 24bhp on Wikkipedia.

I currently have a grasstrack bike with a Honda CB125RS 4stroke 2 valve engine and that pulls 13bhp so i sincerely hope the 250 offers more than 17bhp.

Thats why i though i would ask the collective knowkedge of a worldwide forum of XL250 riders.

Still none the wiser so far - anyone else able to help???
