Re :   flywheel removal

I generally try to use an impact wrench where possible, as it is the best way to prevent damage to my bike. Although when i dont have any choice, i generally use one of these two methods:

1. I have tried the method where you remove the spark plug, and feed an amount of rope into the spark plug hole. Since the rope cannot be 'compressed', the crank will not be able to turn. It is possible to do so with a socket and a breaker bar, or long ratchet.
2. This nut should'nt give you too much trouble here. Some other times i have used a soft piece of metal (eg. copper) to wedge between the drive gear on the crankshaft and the clutch gear. Using this soft metal helps to prevent damage to the gears.

Hope this helps. Eyy

Re :   flywheel removal

Thanks for the reply. I posted my question wrong. Can the bolt be removed without an impact wrench. In other words can I mash the brake and use a wrench?

Re :   flywheel removal

No, it's regular right hand thread. If you mean an air impact wrench, yes. You'll need a puller for the flywheel. Honda has a T handled one that works excellent but several others are available. Pat Orman.

Topic :   Peter Allen Power Pipe

Hi guys,
My current bike, an xl250s seems to have a peter allen power pipe, I have been trying to find info on the net about these pipes, but i cant find any. I have seen them before on various bikes(mostly honda and kawasaki's) Here in Australia.  If anyone knows of any links for info, it would be greatly appreciated if you could send them my way. If you have any information, or any personal thoughts on these pipes, i would love to hear them.

Is the 17mm bolt reverse thread that holds the flywheel? Can it be removed with impact wrench?

Topic :   '81 XL185 Throttle Cable

I'm looking for a throttle cable for my 1981 XL185s.  I've already tried to order one from an ebay parts store, but they sent the wrong size to no fault of their own, it was labeled '81 XL185 but the carb cap was too small.
any ideas?  hints?  tricks?

please email me at:  ludwigsv@gmail.com

Re :   Picked up a '75 today

Great bike, light and easy to learn on, my son advised I should chop the seat sponge so he could start earlier, the seat survived and hes nearly tall enough now.

Re :   XL250 Rapping noise...

Thanks Pat for the adjustment idea, I thought I read that there was no adjustment on the chain which I found very unusual for a honda overhead cam engine.... I will look for the adjust and hope that takes the noise out... Just put this one on the back burner.. Bought TL125 and RE5 Suzuki which have been taking my free time... .. Just glanced on this board again and glad to see a possible solution. Yes, I should get a manual... Regards, Will

Re :   XL250SA Casting flaw?

Check the threads in case. Maybe the bolt was/is loose. There should be no hole going inside so shouldn't be oil to get out. Washer has to seal under bolt head. I'm not sure but I'm thinking some of those did have a hole to outside and would get packed with fine dirt. With my memory, it could be the "old" 250's that had that flaw. Pat Orman.

Re :   XL600R

just got a 83 rfvc xl600. the thing is seemingly ready to rip. I ran it up and down the street once.  The bike takes thirty minutes to start. tried a few starting techniques. when it does start it won't idle. the bike is completely stock. I'm looking for some ideas.  it sounds like you guys know whats up. It has good spark. carbs are clean and up to stock spec. stock air filter. cdi seems to work. new gas and fuel flows fast. air screw is at stock setting. decompressor is adjusted. no battery is this the start prob? weak stator? bad cdi? would really appreciate some tips. thanks

Re :   72 XL250 Misfire at WO Throttle....

Hardo,

I know you say you have changed the main jet, but have you pulled out the emulsion tube that sits underneath it to check all the holes are clear?

I take it your advance mechanism is all free to move and located correctly. Its rare, and I have not heard of it on XLs, but the bob weight springs may be to week thus messing up the timing. Could be worth checking the timing using a strobe.

Whats the plug look like?

Re :   xl250 motorsport - raising the rear wheel?

Thanks Swiss. I have found a lift that uses cups that hold the frame and allow the front and rear wheels to be lifted together but £60 ($90?) seems a bit of a luxory as I only will proberbly never remove the swingarm again. However, might go for a cheap mx lift and use a U bracket either side fitted through the stands platform.  Mind you, quite like M's idea and thats a can be done with bits I have already lying around

Thanks guys,

Phil

tool box with bracket

rolling chasis, ie wheels, brakes, frame, forks, handle bar

skid plate which is NOT bashed apart and only needs paint!!!! I know these are hard to find

front and rear fenders, red (rear has a crack in it, but still has the underside support)

Re :   I pushed it for miles

called on to man up to what I said I would have to say  bust away my friend..  :)    lol.

the carb now appears to be puking fuel so clearly I did a half baked job.  I took it off the bike, used carb cleaner, sprayed the heck out of it and every nook and cranny but never did a 100% dismantle.  I did drop the bowl and cleaned it well but I never took it down to the sum of the parts.  Once sparyed down I let it sit for a few minutes and then cleaned what I could see by hand and air hose.  I was afraid to go any further for fear of letting the adjustments get away from me on such an old weapon.

do you think bowl off and sitting in a vat will clean it good, or will it have to come to a total dismantle?

I'm now of the mind that it and the bike gets a total tear down..  I have the idea that I want to convert it to 12 and flat black it...later tonight I am going to strip it down in the shed and the move it in to the basement for a winter project.  A carb scares me but the rest don't.

life teaches us that the fast answer is never the right answer...  thanks for the input guys...  I will make some updated posts I'm sure as I restore this steed to its glory.

Re :   I pushed it for miles

I always wonder how someone proceded when they say 'I cleaned the carbs'. Do you mean you just sprayed them down real quick while the carbs are  on the bike or did you actually take the carbs off, strip them down, and let them soak in a vat of actual carburetor cleaner overnight.

Im not trying to bust your balls. But it needs clearified. There is a huge difference in procedure, and ultimately, the outcome. I would do the same for the petcock as well.

BTW, for a bike that 'never got used much in the last few years' I would go through the bike completely before riding it anymore.

Rather be safe, than stranded......
