hi , i'm new here , i just picked up this 83 xl250r and i've been trying to get it running right , i've cleaned out the carb , it has the stock jets , they're clean as new , the float doesn't seem to be adjustable in these 83's so i'm sure thats where it should be . the bike starts up first kick and revs just fine and has plenty of power , but when you rev it up and try to let it go back down to idle it hangs up . if you let it sit for a while the rpm's will drop back down to normal . sometimes it does it worse , sometimes it barely does it , but it seems to always do it a little . and sometimes if you let it idle the rpm's eventually slow down and the bike konks out , but it's only done that 2 or 3 times and only after a long time idling . i haven't messed with the mixture screw , i can't find info on what it should be set at anywhere online and a downloadable manual doesn't seem to exist for the 83 xl350 so i may have to track down a real one and buy it . but i'm at a loss , all i can think of is maybe the boot for the carb , or the o-ring under the boot is bad and it's allowing it to suck in too much air which would be causing a lean condition . you guys got any other ideas ?

ok , well i got an air filter and that solved the problem with not being able to cut the throttle wide open quickly . and i bought a can of starting fluid so i could see if the carb boot is leaking ....well it's not , and i still have a problem with it returning to idle . it's running hot too , so hot that it just dieseled after i turned the bike off . does anyone know the factory position of the mixture screw ? this is driving me crazy , i'll be sitting there and the idle will be fine , i'll blip the throttle and it'll rev up and then continue to hold higher rpm's after i let go of the throttle , sometimes it'll come back down , sometimes it'll just stay revved up . when i mess with the idle screw it'll come back down , but then i'm idling really low , almost to the point of it konking out . i've tried different positions of the mixture screw and it doesn't seem to change much , if any of you guys know what i should check please help me out .

i just looked at the plug and it's dry sooty and black so that kind of cancells out my first idea of it being lean . i just looked on the parts diagram and noticed there's an ignition advancer under the clutch cover , do you guys think that if that was stuck , or sticking that it could cause my weird idle and make the bike run hot as hell ?

i just made sure the throttle cable was routed properly and it is , i tried messing with the mixture screw and it doesn't seem to help it , i can have it turned all the way in , or so far out it's about to fall out and it'll still do it . nothing seems to stop it from hanging up . i've been thru this carb more times now than i can count ,  anyone have any other ideas before i sell this dumb thing to someone else and let them deal with it ?

LOL Sometimes it takes a while to get a reply. Are you sure it's an '83? It looks like an '82 in the pic. I believe it was '83 when Honda switched to the dual carb RFVC engine. Have you made sure the slide is returning to the bottom of the throttle stop? I mean, when the bike isn't running, you can here it go thunk when you release the throttle? Is the air cut-off diaphragm in good shape with no pin holes or tears? If your advance rotor is sticky or the springs are worn out, that can give you idle fluctuations. It sure sounds to me like the thing's running lean, even with the sooty plug. I wonder if someone has been inside that engine and got the cam timing off? Just throwing out ideas. Bruce

from what i've gathered 84 is the first rfvc engine . the slide returns to the bottom just like it should . the air cut off diaphram was covered with sticky black junk , but i sat there for an hour gently cleaning it off , it's  clean now and has no rips or holes . the rubber is still very soft . i haven't had a chance to check the advancer yet . i don't want to jinx myself but it would make sense if that was messed up . no matter how much i mess with the mixture it doesn't stop the idle from hanging up . i've even backed the idle adjustment screw all the way out when it was doing the high idle thing and it stayed at high idle . no ammount od starting fluid sprayed around the engine will make it rev up so i know it's not an air leak . but no matter what i do i can't get it to stop hanging up at idle . i haven't checked that the cam timing is off but you'd think that since it's a 1 kick bike that thats not the case , it fires up without choke every time and doesn't seem to burn any oil . the idle thing seems to get worse as the engine warms up and the engine gets pretty hot . if the advancer was sticking and it was running advanced most of the time would that cause it to run hot ? anyone got any pointers for when i pull the side cover off and check out the advancer ? like specs on how far it should turn or whatever ? or how hard it should snap back ? i'm used to old 2 strokes so i'm not really an expert .

oh , also i dunno if the decompressor could have anything to do with my idle problem but it doesn't seem to do anything either , if i move the little lever on the head all the way in either direction i don't feel any difference in the kicker . and it doesn't seem to move when i kick start it ....not that i need it to decompress this massive 250 but if it could be causing the problem i'll gladly fix it .
