Just picked up a 1975 XL250.

Could not get compression, or very little... Checked cam timing, looked good... Blowing air out of carb. Thought valves were bent, took off valve cover, exhaust rocker arm follower was broken off.

5000 miles, cam chain looks good, not able to pull links off of cam sprocket. Purchased complete head and cylinder from ebay. New parts in good condition. Just replaced valve cover with rockers and cam. Original cam bearings on head looked good...

Runs now, but has rapping noise at certain RPM's. Adjusted valves, noise a little better.....

I'm wondering what the noise is? Is it commen for the motosport to have a clicking noise at certain RPMs?

Could it be a worn chain or tensioner and the chain is slapping around?

Why did the original rocker break? Over revving? Valves not working properly? Broken rocker was quite worn... Perhaps I have a bad valve guide, but, when it runs it runs fine other than the noise?

Any thoughts?

hi i had same problem on my 250s...my exhaust rocker arms have a spring in the cover which keeps them tensioned this gave the impression that the valve clearances were  good when i checked again the gaps were to big ..once reset the motor was much bettre..not saying this is whats wrong with yours but its a thought...good luck.  nick from devon uk.

I will look for that spring, but I don't see it in the parts diagram.... Maybe you have a different year?  Changed the oil and it was not as noisy, but then I noticed that it was smoking a bit.... I think I'm going to pull the whole head and cylinder, looks like I can do that in-frame, which will be nice.

Your probably on the right trail with the cam chain and tensioner. When you put motor on TDC compression do the cam marks[on cam sprocket]line up with top of head or is the front mark down and the back one up? With a broken rocker being run the chain is probably worn out and possibly the cam chain tensioner is broken. Chain tension is set by loosening the lock nut and set bolt[on left side just behind the shifter peg might be a rubber cap on it]and retighten in reverse manner. Careful on the torque, just a 6mm bolt in aluminum threads. If you can't get a chain I can make them. A Clymers manual helps a ton. Pat Orman.

Thanks Pat for the adjustment idea, I thought I read that there was no adjustment on the chain which I found very unusual for a honda overhead cam engine.... I will look for the adjust and hope that takes the noise out... Just put this one on the back burner.. Bought TL125 and RE5 Suzuki which have been taking my free time... .. Just glanced on this board again and glad to see a possible solution. Yes, I should get a manual... Regards, Will
