Hi there, new to this community.  I'm working on restoring a '74 350 of my dad's.  The bike had 15/54 gearing, which I know wasn't stock ,when I took it apart.  He used to do alot of off road riding but once it's back together he'll probably do mostly street and a little off road, probably 70%-30%.  What was stock gearing and what's a good ratio to go with given his intended riding?

45/15 was the stock gearing. Some people change to a 42/15 or 39/15 for highway use. 45/14, 51/15, and 51/14, were good off-road ratios.

So if 15/45 was stock and some people were going with higher ratios for street use and some were going with lower ratios for off road use does that mean the stock ratio was a pretty good all around ratio?  I honestly can't remember what the bike ran like with the 15/54 ratio, I rode it a few times when I was 11 years old, some 25 years ago.  All my dad has to say is it could have higher gearing.  Its been a long time since he's ridden it too.

Also, where's a good place to buy chain and sprockets for the XL?  Any paticular brands to look for?  I know what's good for my modern sportbikes but not too familiar for the old XL's.

Having run the stock 15/45 until I changed to 15/39 this summer, I would say 15/42 is probably the all around gearing with 15/45 being shaded a little to the dirt side.  However, topography plays into this a great deal. I live in coastal Georgia where anything above 15/45 is just a waste.
