Came across this today: There's a nipple on the outside of the top of the engine, near the contact points, which used to have a tube going towards it. Now my garagist has obviously forgotten to reinstall this tube after he installed new valves. Could this be the cause of my problems? I can't seem to get above 4000 rpm (engine sputters) Where does this tube come from and what's it for?

1974 XL350

Thanks,

So it doesn't go anywhere?
Come on, I thought i finally found the answer to my problem.
How does the ignition advance word then? Cause it's very curious that my troubles begin at 4000 rpm, just when the owners manual says you have to make sure the generator index has to stay within advance timing marks.

Mechanical advance, no vacuum lines, just the void vent hose on the point housing

I just looked up the hose on the drawing and it calls it a vent line.

I would make sure the mech advance is lubed.......it rotates on the shaft from the cam and must be free and lubed. There is a bearing surface there but only for the slight movement in the mechanical advance which hides beneath the points plate. Chuck
