Just wanted to say hi to everyone. my birthday is next sunday and my wife let me get a present. a 1974 (year i was born) XL 350. plus the 'october' colors add to it for me, and its styled just like my first bike, an xr 75. i dont remember the year of it, but i was the only kid that still had a bike w/ a metal gas tank, wish i could find that one again. anyways all i've done is unload my bike and join this board. this will be the first motorcycle i'm going to fix up. until now its been all mopars, wich i have several of. but for 200 dollars i could afford it, (barely). the previous owner said it had carb trouble and has had it off a couple times, though i didnt get to ask what made him think it was the carb, and also the kick start is cracked. its been welded before, so i'm gonna need another one. really thats all i know for right now, he's supposed to bring the title by friday, and i'm gonna piddle w/ it some, so i should know more by then. i would appreciate any advice, again nice to meet ya'll and thanx for your time. Sean

Welcome to the board DD. Yes, most likely its a '75 model. The VIN or serial numbers ran as follows:
1974 XL350-1000001 ~
1975 XL350-2000001 ~
You can find some examples of factory paint schemes in these photos:

thanks Douglas, i'm up here in Union SC, used to come to savannah alot when i was in beaufort. as for the xl, the carb trouble the man spoke of appears to start in the rusty gas tank. i didnt expect to see that since he had been working on it, it still had a dead gas smell too, even though the gas in it was new, so thats my starting point. he's giving me another tank also, may or may not use it. i'm torn right now wich way to go w/ this bike, all out dirt or more for the street. but i have alot to do before i decide, a whole winter w/ her on the back porch, unless i can talk my wonderful wife into letting me have the kitchen thats where my dad built alot of bikes when i was a kid. any particular upgrades you feel i should definately do, as far as engine, exhaust, brakes, etc.? or are these bikes pretty solid in those areas? i'd almost bet it would need attention in the suspension for any serious off road riding and i'm not really sure where to start there either. these questions are a little early i know, since i'm not sure exactly what i want... but i do know for sure that i'm going to ride it alot and hard, whether dirt or road only or resto'd back to original. still any advice, along w/ me looking into the financial aspect of each would help me decide, as i'm taking her apart and cleaning things up. i'm excited about it though, and i'm tickled to have a winter project while i'm cooped up inside. (i have no shop) anyways thanks for your reply. Sean

Your story is similar to mine . I paid $130.00 at an
auction for my first one . I got it running , but its very rich at low
rpm .It needs a top end, so I'll try again after thats done. I
bought a 77 also and its also somwhat rich at low rpm, so
I'll drop the needle and all the way down, and see what happens . My
'74 has a candy apple green gas tank , every thing else is black.. Good
luck with your project , I'll watch for your progress!. Rick

Does any one know where to get a tank for this bike. I have a 1974 and would not care if I had to use a generic one until I get an original

My sugestion would be to put a CDI ignition on it the very first thing as the stock system at it's very best is junk. Pat Orman. ps. THEN go to the fuel problems.
