81 XL500S speedo is broken. I disconnected the cable from both ends, it turns fine, and seems to fit well into the slots at both ends. When I reconnect the cable at the front wheel, it doesn't spin from the top when I walk the bike around. Maybe I need to run instead to get it to spin. Is there anything serviceable inside the speedometer housing or could it be the drive gear at the front wheel?

pull the cable out of the front wheel drive gear, spin the wheel and watch the drive and see if it turns, if it does then its the spedo itself as long as the cable is not broken.

 Taxidermman57, you were right. The tab does not turn inside the wheel. Thanks for the tip. I'll open up the wheel casing next and see what is broken.

I bet the gear is gone that is how it goes when ever I get an xl.

I took the wheel off to inspect. The speedo gear and worm gear look and work fine together. And the speedo gear seems to fit OK in the slots on the hub. However, the 2 washers that go under the speedo gear are missing. Without them as spacers, I'll bet the gear tabs can't seat. Guess someone serviced the brakes, and left the washers out. Hopefully the washers are still available...

 Washers did the trick for just $3.48. Except now there is a whining sound coming from the speedo gauge unit at 20 mph. Anyone with an idea what that could be?

Probably dry or broken plastic gear. My advice? Buy the Endurance LCD speedo/computer and mail me your old speedo!!Surprised
I need a top cover for the speedo, I'm afraid the wind will make the needle jump around. But all the lights work! Cheers
