Just bought a 1980 XL500S off a guy on craigslist.  The bike runs, but smokes a bit.  I plan to replace the exhaust gaskets and possibly the piston rings.  My main concern is a slow leak just below the shifter.  The shifter slides ~1/4" right and left (not up and down), if I pull or push on it.  Has anyone else run into this lateral movement on the shifter?  And if so, how did you remedy the problem?

The Cclip is out of it's groove on the shiftshaft. Take the cover off and put it back in place. Can't help on the oil leak. Pat Orman.
