I just bought an '83 XL600 that has a salvage title and 30,000 miles, but runs very strong and probably had a recent engine rebuild judging from the parts box that came with it and how it runs. I was going to pull the engine on my '82 XL 500 and reseal the cam cover and tune it (only thing it needs and only an honet 2,000 miles on it. The XL 600 is a total hoot though, and I feel like I'd rather clean it up (minor cosmetics) and keep it and let the 500 go (can't raly keep two). Any feedback on the later bike's shortcomings that may make me want to reconsider ?

The only problem with the 600 is it starts like a dream cold but is a bear when it's hot...any ideas ? How hard are the twin carbs to keep set up and adjusted ? any other issues with the '83's ?

Many Thanks !

The only real issues with these 600s was they ran really hot from the factory due to very lean jetting for emissions purposes. Also top end oiling problems. My personal opinion is the oiling problem was a result of the overheating, the oil losing it's viscosity in the extreme heat. Of course I could be way off on that. A lot of the bikes ate their cams and rocker arms. The heads were prone to crack between the exhaust valves and spark plug hole as well. Put a free flowing muffler on and get your jetting right and it will start way easier and you should have none of the above mentioned problems, unless you're one of those people who can break an anvil with a glass hammer. LOL They make good power too. They were rated by Honda at 43 HP. I'm pretty sure that's at the crank. Pretty respectable for a corked up '80s smog engine. Stock for stock they make more power than a new XR650L.

Don't let anything I've said scare you away from the old XL600s. They're great bikes. Hope my rambling has helped you some.LOL Bruce

Thanks, those are exactly the kind of things I'd rather know about now rather than later...So far I'm glad I traded up from my '82 XL500R, it's undeniably a better ride for me in every way except a few aesthetic details...I've had it tuned & looked through by a shop who seem to know what they're doing with these old bikes, and now I'm ready to have the carbs pulled and gone through and put a new chain & re-done seat on it a make it my daily ride...I normally do my own work, but time has made it unlikely I'll do it right and when it's needed, so for once I'm hoping as long as I know what should be done & how from those more experienced like yourself, I'll at least have a chance at keepin' her rolling...

Hi guys very interresting subject. I also own a 83 600, and I just rebuild the engine with a new cam, new rockers, I put new piston rings, machined the valve seats and ofcourse replaced all the seals etc. I think the engine have had some problems with lube to the head, cause the cam was very worn, so was the rockers.

I really like the tip about the jetting, but where can I get a upgrade jet kit for this engine? I am also interrested in the muffler.. it is kinda hard to get parts like this in Norway, any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance - Eivind

Well, I bought the '83 XL600R that was for sale locally.  This bike has 20K on the odo, but I cannot believe how well the bike was cared for.  Even the fork oil had been changed fairly recently - too bad I found out the hard way.  Oh well, at least it has 10w in it now.

I HAVE to mod every bike I own.  I immediately pulled the air box snorkel, which HAD to increase air flow 50%.  I will also pull the backfire screen when I am ready to re-jet.  I  also immediately added a Supertrapp exhaust, which I had to paint black - the silver just didn't look right-->  $192.00 on ebay + shipping.  I have a good connection at a bike shop here in town and paid $199.

Jetting - the '84 on have a better carb set=up IMO.  The '83 does not have a true pilot circuit.  I will eventually try to buy a set of 84 or later carbs, but will play with the jetting on this one real soon.

Good Luck with the XL600, I really like mine so far.  Even though I have only ridden it probably 6 miles or so.

Here is the e-bay link:  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-Supertrapp-Racing-Dirt-Exhaust-For-Honda-XR-600-R_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247QQcategoryZ35596QQihZ014QQitemZ330206432603QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V

This is the same part number I bought.  It fits perfect!

Good to hear there are others who like these '83 600's and have resources to mod 'em where needed and keep 'em running. I love riding mine, now that I've got a "works every time" starting routine, but that leads me to a question: I had my carbs re-done, but they still seem prone to flood when I'm trying to start. I've been told that the seats are non-replaceable and that even in a shop done off bike job they still don't get done, just the needles are replaced. Is this true or bogus ? As long as I leave the petcock off when starting, no problem. Once it fires, then it can be opened and never floods, even at idle at a light hot, etc...happy trails !
