Can anyone here help me with a comparision between the xl500 and xl600?  I just sold my '78 XL250S, which I loved to ride, but just want more hp.  If anyone has first hand experience with both the Xl500 and xl600 I would love to hear about it.

Thanks!

OK. The XL500 engine is a larger version of your XL250S. It has way more power than the 250. All the XL500s, both the S and the R models were limited to drum brakes front and rear. All around decent bikes with a fairly simple engine design. The XL500R and its brother the XR500R, are excellent wheelie bikes, with an excellent balance point.

The XL600R is a completely different engine and frame design. It has two carburetors and makes a lot more power than the XL500. It has a front disc brake and drum rear. Another excellent wheelie bike but, in my opinion, had a little "peakier" balance point. The engine has more of a "hot roddie" feel to it with the dual carbs. In stock form, these bikes made more power than the new XR650L. And with a little tuning, these bikes can hold there own against modern dual-sports.

Hope this helps some.

You must be reading my mind on what I wanted to ultimately know about the XL600.  I have a line on one that I will probably purchase now.  It has 20,000 miles, which means to me a top end right away, but that is not a problem.  It appears to be in excellent condition.  I think I will be the owner of a big red machine very soon.

Thank you VERY much!
