Bought a non-running '74 XL175 of unknown history for my husband and son to dig into. The wiring had all been badly fiddled with. I kicked it over a few times and it felt like it had decent compression so I bought it for cheap and figured if they can get it running - excellent. If not, well, it's a good way for them to get into wrenching. I do little repairs on my own bikes but nothing major. I'll help them where I can but for the most part they're on their own. I don't believe either of them has ever had grease on their hands though, so they're starting from scratch. Hey, everyone's got to start somewhere, right?

Well, we started to troubleshoot it last night and suddenly the kickstarter won't budge. Bike rolls with the clutch pulled in, I can climb up and down through all the gears, can get it in neutral and it rolls freely. Kickstarter moves just a few degrees but then hits a hard block and won't move at all. I can stand on it. I'm thinking loose camchain tensioner bolt, but my bikes (and repair experience) are all '75 550s. I have no idea what the guts of this XL175 look like. Any ideas what could be causing the kickstarter to be blocked? Husband and son were a lot more excited about working on the bike when it looked like it might just have an electrical or carb problem. Now that the kickstarter won't even move they've left it sitting in the middle of my shop.

RE:'74 XL175 project

I'm hoping you get some good input on this thread.. Over the summer I picked up three old xl175s.. The first one is very nearly complete 74. It's main problem is the kick starter shaft is sheared off, only a nub pertrudes from the cases. The second, a 78, was a mess but had straight unpitted forks and wheels plus some other lill' things.. it too has starter shaft damage, it's twisted, bent, and stripped.. The third, a 73/74, was mostly picked over, had a good exhaust and a starter shaft intact.. The first twos engines turn by hand or bumping in gear.. the third is frozen and acts like the piston/rings are stuck.. After reading your post, I am concerned this one may also be bad.. It will shift into neutral and rolls fine.. Wishing I was further along and could tell you what's happened internally to your engine.. Get an exploded/parts view,, there are a couple of possible gears/springs that could be jammed.
