Got a bent fork tube can't see sending 200 bucks on a new and been trying to figure out what fits.  Can find XR 200/250 front ends pretty cheap with the triple tree and all.  Thinking the head bearing cups will most likely interchange, but I get stuck on the axle and brake assembly hangers and the little stuff.  I entered into this board to see if any of you folks would know some of theses answers.  Don't have much money in the little bike, but it sure is a blast messing around with it, hate to see it down. Oh I have also been wondering if I can just take a larger jug and plop it down with an exhast all and  thus have me bigger thumper?  Really wondering if the timing chain will fit. I don't want to split the case or nothing.

Is straightening it out of the question? I've had pretty good luck with just a bottle jack and a couple of lengths of chain. You just put loops of chain around a ~4"x12" and the tube. Insert bottle jack and have at it. You have to position the chain loops so the part you want to bend has the longest distance between it and the bottle jack but nothing you won't know intuitively.

Cool tube straightening rig,, thanks for the ideas..

For a direct factory cross ref, you could consult bikebandit.com's OEM parts list and see if your fork tube is available on more years/models, it's kinda tedious but would help.

Well straightening was an option I kind of took all ready.  Went over to friend's house and used a press and I thought we got it pretty straight but now it blinds in the slide. I figure it's snaked a little bit now and more press work is most likely not an option anymore. Wished I knew your bottle jack trick then. It's like hmm a board and a chain to torque against. Anyway the tube was bent when i got it.  The bike has the same ole story, someone flipped it didn't ride it much after that, and sat for long time.  A hick came along dusted it off and gave it to his young son, and the boy rode the hair off it.  Ole dad figured he would fix the bent fork as he was cleaning the bike up again for the 100th time, and the boy can't understand why we ever wanted to fix the fork to start with.  While it may have been an issue for everybody else to ride the bike it was no problem for him.  So now I'm trying to figure out my options.  I only paid 300 bucks for the bike and it was factory clean other than the issues alrady spoke about.  I have way more money in parts for sprockets, chains and tires than in the bike.  I'm dumping money like crazy in roping horses and now old pick-ups for the kid and I'm looking for cheap fix on the bike. Plus it's been a great little machine and I just hate to see it down.  I'll check into the bikebandit.com thing.  But still I'm thinking that front end must be able to be swaped out with another type.  As long as it's jumpie I'm sure the boy doesn't really care.

Look into e-bay too.. There's quite a bunch of folks that make tearing down ol' bikes and selling 'em piece meal a trade/hobby..
I bought several parts off there and craig's list with no big problems for my scary ol' three wheelers.
Can you do some measurements of the old tubes and comp them to anything in a local junk/dismantler yard?
I wonder if there's a motorcycle parts cross reference list out there, like there is for cars/trucks?

Good luck, Art

Dude! I have a 1978 xl175 I am going to part out.
The fork tubes are grimy and lightly pitted but straight.
If you're still around/ interested respond, we can arrange something.
Just a second, I'll measure there outer diameter too... 31mm + a hiney hair.
That was just a quicky measurement using a vernier caliper.

Cheers! Art
