Thought you all might enjoy another, although less than direct, success story.

Got the bike a couple of years ago with the intent to getting it running for my wife so she can ride along with me on my 80 XL500.  Complete.  Only has 1900 mi showing but sitting for many years.  Finally pulled it out of the shed last week.

Pull the carb and clean (I thought).

Then I checked for spark - none.   So of course I start with the connections in the headlight (dumb) and around the coil.  Had continuity through the system, ig switch, stop switch - connections clean.  THEN I check the points - rusted frozen, and the advancer cam is very rusty.  Replace points and time.  Still no spark.  Check the coil.  No resistance at the secondary.  Check spare coils - same prob.  Strange.  Finally figure all but one of the plug cap/wire ends are bad.  Use the good one and now I have spark.

Fresh fuel and it starts first kick, only idles, then nothing.  Recheck spark - nothing.

Check points again.  Turns out the advancer cam is so worn it won't allow me to adjust the points to both close and open properly and it was frozen too.  Replace advancer cam from one from and XL250.  Again I get spark.

Another try at starting - only idle.  Re-clean the carb; find the emulsion tube completely plugged?  I never removed it just the main.

Another try - starts first kick and idles and revs great!  First ride was great.

Now to finish the cosmetics, recover the seat, and replace tires.  At this rate she will be riding it NEXT Summer.
