I'm looking at a 1989 XR250 bored to 280cc. The engine seems a bit noisy, not a cam chain rattle or tappet ticking but more of a faint grinding noise.
Is this normal? or is it on it's last legs.
Cheers.

Could it be just the normal noise of the cam chain adjuster rubbing on the chain?

Your trying to decide on buying the bike? If so, grinding noises are never a great sign, but its difficult to say really -I'm guessing you may already know that.  Are you buying it for a daily driver or an occasional trail bike? is it a good price? are you buying from someone who has obviously taken good care of it?  If its a faint (barely audible) noise I personally wouldn't be all that concerned, if it's a good looking bike at a good price.
If its a rat bike, missing parts, looking neglected and the seller doesn't know how or when the oil was last changed i would still buy it if it was cheap...
