Hey There,
I have a 1978 XL350 -

I am stumped on an electrical issue that has my headlight out, neutral light out, and brake light doesn't work. Its weird because the taillight lights up fine and the horn works when the ignition is turned on, but nothing else. I am doing my best to trace through all the connections, make sure they are all connected to the right place, and using a volt meter to see that they are getting power. I am not 100% confident in my troubleshooting of this because I am new to fixing electrical on a motorbike, however I think I am seeing that at some point somewhere near the headlight (inside) I feel like I've got nothing going to the light (voltmeter touching the connections of the back of the headlight light bulb). Nothing seems to be going to the light switch on the handlebar as well (remember though that the horn wire are getting power and working). It also doesn't seem as though any power coming from the wires that should plug into the flasher (winker) either.

My thoughts so far -
some wires are no good that are running to my headlight (blue, grey)
light switch no good?
headlight no good?
Can't think of a damned reason the breaklight won't work when the taillight does?

I'd be happy to get any kind of advice in the form of troubleshooting steps, solutions, whatever.

Thanks.
Greg

The head lite is a separate entity and only works when the engine is running. test the HL sealbeam   with a 6v battery charger .
The best thing to do with an old bike is to clean all the terminals and connectors . I use CLR  , the product for removeing calcium, lime and rust from plumbing fixtures.
I dip the connectors into asmall cup of CLR for one min. then in acup of water for  one min., finish off by spraying WD-40 on the treminals and connectors befor reinstalling. There things have been floating around for 30 some years and are somewhat cruddy.
The tail lite is on when ever the the key is on and the brake lite and turjn signals  too.
Make sure your battery is fully charged and that the fuse is OK.
Also get a book on the bike one with a wiring diagram!

I found this page very useful.  It has  ALL the diagrams.

Hope this helps.  My headlight doesn't work but everything else does.  Any pointers?  My battery doesn't seem to get much charge with the bike running either...
