Got my 76 XL 175 from a local motorcycle repair shop (not ouside with the other ' for sales', but inside in the shop).

Took it for a test run about 4 miles out to BLM, up and down the trails for an hour. Coming back, down hill, had a couple of clunk, lurches, then great.

Back out on pavement, 40-50 mph on back road, two lefts, two more clunk/ lurches......thought I might have broke a chain or brakes grabbing durng turns......smooth running back home and parked,

Today I checked the oil, none on stick.......drained the oil, maybe four or five drops....OUCH!!!

Put a quart of Mobile 1 bike oil, one kick start and runs smooth as silk.

OK, give me your worst senario/ best senario, making the best case a little stronger please!

If it still runs and dont smoke I would say its probably ok. Does the compresion still seem ok? I did wworse to a yamaha blaster and it still ran fine I forgot to hook up the oil pump and rode it around it would die and I would start it run it it would die. I am really suprised I didnt sieze the piston but it worked fine for a long time after that. you may have tore up the rocker pads and cam,  the piston is probably fine if the bike still runs good.

I don't understand how, with no oil at all, the rod bearings, etc didn't spin.....the little engine still has good compression, starts on first kick and runs smooth as silk....go figure!! I really don't see going thru it until some negative sign shows up tho. Thanx much for the encouragement, Chuck

Chuck,
The little bugger's got a roller bearing big end, it takes some real abuse to stop that roller crank from spinning.  The piston pin is journal, as are the cam "bearings"(not bearings, but you understand.... journals machined into the head and cover...the only dumb design on this motor.  Ok, the kick start shaft is weak too), but they don't have inserts to "spin".  If they got really dry they'd mar and gall, but being driven off the crank I think the momentum of the crank would power it past the bad spot.  If the bike still runs smooth I'm sure it'll be ok.  These things have a bullet proof rep, from what I've read.  Wish mine was running so I could prove it ;-).

A picture of the parts.  #1 is the roller crank assembly.

This is an actual crank....sorry if you already know this stuff...assuming you don't.

well, took the little beastie out to BLM again today and it ran perfect the whole morning, back on the pavement, heading home.......first 90 degree, third gear left turn....clunk/ lurch! what the @#%$!!&%..! looked down and saw the kick stand almost dragging.

must have not put it up all the way after calling home! whewww!

But it was the same clunk/ lurch as I had without oil, so hopefully it was not seizing up before!

By the odometer it went over 25 miles without a drop of oil......

Another miracle, checked with the repair shop and the guy admitted he had drained the oil to replace a leaky seal and forgot to add any.....wow! never figured he'd come that clean. well, see what the future mile hold for it. , Chuck
