Hi everyone,

I recently bought a XL 250 R, but the gearbox is bad. Making a lot of noise, especialy in second gear. Also the kickstarter sometimes doesn't work.

Now am i wondering if it is possible to use a non-RFVC engine and put my good cilinder, piston and rfvc head on it?
And if so, wich years are usable?

I hope you guys can help me out!

Cheers,  Bas.

Sorry Bas_zelf but the engines are completely different. Nothing is interchangable. There's even some differences between the early and late model RFVC engines. Your best bet is to keep a watchful eye on ebay. Good luck.

Hi Brucifer,

Thanks for your quick reply.

I guess i'll look out for a complete engine in good working order or perhaps rebuild my own. I know they are not available in large numbers..
Any chance there is an overhoul kit for sale somewhere with all the needed bearings, seals etc? Or perhaps a manual or guide from someone who has done this before?

I have some experience with rebuilding car engines but not with this kind of small motorcycle motors.

Cheers,  Bas.

I'm not aware of any rebuild kits. I normally disassemble the engine and see what it needs and just order the parts individually. You didn't say what year your bike is but anything in the '80s should still be available through Honda. A couple companys such as Athena and I believe Cometic have complete gasket sets available. Also try bikebandit.com when shopping for parts. I highly recommend finding a Genuine Honda Service Manual to help you through the repair process. They're put together very well with excellent pics.
