The pictures are uploaded by Geoff for the web pages. You can click on the Contact Administrator at the bottom of the page. If you just want to send them with the email, you need to put them up on one of the "hosting" web picture sites and then link to that address in your email by clicking on the tiny picture or a tree that is in the bars above the email boxes. If you move your mouse over it it should say "Insert a picture"..
Very interested in your set-up. Price is a bit steep, but I understand the problems.

Yes! We may indeed be interested! We could sell them on-line here at Oldrice.com too!
As for the pics - PLEASE send them directly to me at oldrice@comcast.net and I'll make a page for the pics AND insert them into this thread for you.
Keep up the good work! Sounds like a lot of fun.

Seaking of which Geoff, we need pics of that custom frame and swingarm that you put in the posts a couple of weeks ago on the web pages. Have you heard anything at all about it? Where is it located?

Ok Dick,
We have waited this long. What kind of price could you get for us if we bought 5 or 10 at a time? I am sure that you could sell a couple of sets over there. I know now from years of experience, that most of these things either go totally unavailable, or prices go up on custom work no matter what. Yes, you can sometimes find a good deal on an EBay bike that just HAPPENS to have a Webster gear set. Good luck waiting for it to come along! The gears look outstanding. I could have bought a set from Alan Greenwood years ago for about $350, but that was a tremendous amount of money to me back then. I am trying out the wide ratio WR gearset from a TL in my XL because I think that it has the power to pull the ratio jumps and it is not an MX bike. I need the top end for the desert and the stump pulling for the mountains. I COULD regear from one ride to the next, but that would be a pain! The TL gear set has the thicker "fingers" like the later '86 gear box has, but regardless, with enough pressure like some whoop-de-doos and throttle work even these would break without some help. I think that the gearset would be the right "fix" and so did Alan. Note, he ALSO used the Webster 4 gear set for his Pro race bikes! I have read about even the Webster sets breaking in the fast open desert races.
What would be the delivery time for the sets if we ordered 5-10?

Swiss,
the guy who did my primary drive is not very keen to do any more right now, he is totally stacked with other (higher volume and more lucrative) road racer work. I guess I need to catch him in the right mood!
As for the Webster gears, I want to cost up a batch of 10, but to do that I need to split my motor to give the guy my set as a pattern....which I'm not gonna do until after the race season.... say October.
Alternatively, does anyone have Steve Poggi's email address? (I lost it when my PC crashed last year). If so, his former supplier may still have the drawings and might make me some more sets. I could sell a few in Europe, for sure.
Until then - use a cush drive wheel if possible, and definitely a chain tensioner!
By the way, the Green/silver XL that you guys are all drooling over is based on a '79 or 80 CR250 Red Rocket rolling chassis. I may have another pic or two, which I will forward to Geoff.

Dick, I have Steve's # etc. The last batch we had made was 20 sets and I beieve he told me they wanted a minimum of 40 or 50 sets to make anymore. Also have the info for Webster gears and who to talk to there. I'll try to dig that up and email it to you before[if I have time] I leave for AZ. Pat Orman.

Let me know when you are back from your trip, I'm now ready to order some stuff from you for a new 480 motor.

Pat,
Just found the website for Duel in the Desert #11 On the northeast side of Phoenix. If I can set things up I would love to make it out to that. I can afford the time off, just need to figure out what it is going to cost me.

Pat,
I will try to make it out there. Are you going to be there all 3 days? It is only 1000 miles round trip to me, but I don't have a bike ready to ride so I will just be watching. Hope the weather clears, the tracks should be well wet down with this weather we are having out this way.

Dick,
I am still more interested in the primary drives. IF your guy isn't willing to make them up, would he be willing to share the specs so that we could have a batch made up by someone else? Are the only things that he is actually machining the gears? Are the rest of the parts Honda CR or CRF parts and what about the bolts in the cush drives? I will probably have to step up and get a 4 gear set also, but I want to try my WR (wide ratio) TL set first. I think it will be the right way to go for the conbination of Desert and Mountains riding..
Thanks,
Swiss

Swiss, the day job has taken over my life at present, but as soon as I get some breathing space I'll see what I can fix up, for both primary drive and gearbox.
The clutch basket and cush rubbers are respectively stock and aftermarket CRF 450. The clutch inner hub is stock XL350, the clutch gear and crank gear are the unique parts which I had made. I think the bolts came with the clutch basket.
I haven't even had time to test fit it yet, much less try it! I'll definitely keep you guys posted.
By the way, I already fitted an hydraulic operation on the standard clutch last season, which works like a a dream. Magura YZF426 setup acting on the standard actuating arm. Even with monster springs to stop clutch slip, no more Popeye forearms! I'll get a picture posted one of these days...

Dick,
I looked at one of the web sites here in the states that shows part listings for Honda and on the 450 clutches, they didn't show any bolts at all. The baskets are sold as 1 piece with gear, cushions and backing plate together. Figure that they are rivited like the old basket was. The listed cost of the basket is about $233 by itself. I am surprised that the basket uses the same clutch plates as the old XL... That would help on the cost since I have a set of Barnett plates and CR aluminum plates in the clutch that I have. Good luck working things out. Keep us informed. By the way, didn't see ANY of the trick Knobby Shop bikes at the AHRMA Vintage Nationals in Phoenix, AZ this last weekend. Only a couple of XL MX bikes but a lot of them in the Flattrack area. Saw a really nice Hallman TT Yamaha.
I will send Geoff pictures soon.

Two items:
1) i'm now have a very reputable gear manufacturer able to make some sets of Webster billet 3rd/4th gears. These are buletproof, I've raced MX for 3 years with mine without problem, on a 460cc hot motor that broke standard gears regularly.
Obviously the cost will depend on volume, but 10 sets is about the minimum sensible. Is anyone in the US interested? I won't have a true price indication for a few weeks, but figure $500-ish for 3rd and 4th gear pairs (4 pinions in all),
2) for those who are in love with the beautiful green and silver XL further up this thread, there is an article in the latest VMX magazine, with the whole story and more pics. Not only that but ALSO an article on the John Banks Merlyn Honda, an XL350 based motocrosser built for the big man by a race car team, to race in the Motocross GP's. Only two were ever completed before Banks returned to CCM. Both are owned by my buddy Bob Collier and have been restored to STUNNING condition.
Get it all here, you can buy single issues if you are not a motocross fan and don't want to subscribe. http://www.vmxmag.com.au/04_current_issue/vmx_current_issue_29.html

OK Dick,
I wanted to bring this back to the top of the list and also find out how much interest that you have had for the gear sets? I got the ATC ignition mod done to my cam/points housing on my XL350 and I am trying to get some more work done on the 4 bikes that I need to fix and my house/workshop.
