If I torque the rear axel nut to the specs in the manual, the wheel doesn't turn.  I can back the nut off and the wheel will spin.  There isn't really anyway to put the axel and spacers on wrong so I'm thinking the wheel bearings might be bad.  Is that a possibility?

I just realized the axel is installed from the wrong side.  Can't see that would make a difference though.

Dennis, Is the center spacer crushed? Or the spanner nut not tightened all the way? If center spacer is too short and you tighten axle the bearings get side loaded and bind. Pat.

If you can turn the bearings and they are smooth, they are good.  Make sure your brake plate spins freely inserted in the hub, make sure your spacers are correct.

gride2, as far as I can tell, its impossible to get the spacers on wrong, the sprocket side one goes into the wheel hub and the brake side doesn't.

There is a tube like spacer that goes inside the hub between the bearings, it looks like s short piece of pipe did your rear hub have one?

I didn'take the bearings out so I assume there is one there.  I'll see if I can get it apart and have a look.

Maybe, I'll have to take the bearings out and see.  Do I need a bearing puller to get them out of the wheel?

Pat,

After rereading the posts in this thread, I noticed something I didn't pick up on before. What's a spanner nut?

Dennis, Spanner nuts are internal or external threaded nuts with either notches or holes that a spanner wrench fits to loosen or tighten. Example is the spring preload adjusters on shocks or the nut on the top of fork stem that tightens bearing race. CRF rear wheels have one that holds a rear wheel bearing in place. Pat.

Pat,

Does the XL350 have one, I don't recall seeing anything like that.

Dennis, Is part #3 threaded externally. I'm not sure as I haven't used one for a looong time but I think that part is one and holds the seal and bearing in. Pat.

I don't know Pat, You can't see any threads, but that doesn't mean its not threaded as it sits flush with outside of the hub.  I'll take a look at it.

RE:Rear Wheel Bearings?

I'm still having problems with the rear wheel.  I removed and disassembled the wheel as far as I can.  Part nr, 13 is in place and doesn't look damaged.

Here's the sprocket side of the wheel.

The brake side.

The axel with spacers.  The left spacer fits into the part below and looks like it bears on either the end of part number13 or a wheel bearing.

The sprocket side with the sprocket and flange removed.  I believe the center part, with the four holes, is nr. 3 on the parts diagram.  The left side axel spacer fits into this part and makes contact with what looks like the end of part nr. 13.  It looks like you should be able to adjust this with a tool fitting into the four holes, but it won't have any effect on the fit of the spacer because the spacer is much longer than this is deep.

A close up of the hub.  You can just see the bearing surface of whatever the spacer sit on in the center of the hub.

I installed put the axel into the wheel with all the spacers installed and the wheel will spin with the axel held stationary so everything works with it off the bike.  I can't figure out why it wouldn't work on the bike too.

I spent the afternoon clean and degreasing all the parts and test fiting the parts.  I didn't see anything binding so I reinstalled the rear wheel and what do you know I could torque it to 50 lbs no problem.  This is the third time I removed and reinstalled the wheel and now it works.  Go figure.

Dennis, The spanner nut holds the seal and retains that side bearing in hub. Spacer sets against bearing and is seal surface. Maybe the brake backing plate and hub were interfering with each other the first couple of times. Pat

Help me out here...

I'm down to this same point in removing the sprocket side of the hub.  I've even removed the retainer with the 4 holes - using a drift and hammer.  It spun out fairly easy.

Should the sprocket carrier now sepaerate from the main hub or is there still something else that's holding it in place?  I've tried to ease it off with a mallet and drift, pry with a tire iron etc. and so far it won't move.

Do I just need to put more 'English' on it?

Thanks

I believe there's a snapring or Cclip that retains the hub. Maybe #2 on that fische. Pat Orman.

So the circlip holds the Flange assy to the hub. That's too bad.

I didn't see the circlip in there so I guess the dust seal needs to come off first.

Thanks!

Yup, the seal prys out pretty easy and the circlip holds the sprocket carrier on.  That spanner nut doesn't need to come off.
