HI, i'm rebuilding a 1979 XL 500 S, the bike was very original, it has 5000 miles, the engine worked perfect ( i used it for half an hour only before totally dismantling the bike ) i have everything ready for build the bike again, the last thing that i have to do is the engine, so yesterday i started to disassemble it ( because it has a huge oil leak that is on the front fins where the exhaust comes out ) i supposed that it was a bas gasket or something, but i realize that that engine was never disassembled , and the gaskets where OK, so, any idea if the head of this engines tend to crack and leak the oil from somewhere, or it must be an o'ring ? the oil did not come from the side where the rocker arm shafts are, it comes directly from the front of the head. I also disassemble the cylinder, and it was on perfect shape, the cylinder and the piston are like new. It's safe to build it again with the same ring and piston?
Thanks
Christian

500S's are noted for having oil leaks up there, and I've not really seen where anyone has had success remedying that. I'm lucky, because my '80 500S doesn't leak a freaking drop.  Just keep her topped off, and it should be fine.

Hello,
I think the oil gets out of the head stud thread if the head gasket has a slight oil weep, quiet common.
Remedy, remove head, remove the head studs (short ones in the head front and back) seal them with thread sealant and a new head gasket with some hylomar sealant on it and you should have no dramas.
As with the piston and rings, have the piston a bore measured to make sure its within tolerance and I would give the bore a quick hone and put in a new set of rings, they are not that expensive for piece of mind.

Cheers

Quite common for the rocker box to head surface to leak on those bikes. No gasket, just yamabond. No fix for that just clean real good and assemble with yamabond[light coat on one surface]. Probably won't leak again for quite a while with stock cam and springs.  Pat.

Thanks for everybody. I assembled the engine, and i think that the oil leak was from dry valve guide seals, because now it doesn't leak anything ( and i used it for 3 hours in the hot Florida. For the rings, the cylinder was like new, so i made a quick hone with a new set of rings, and it's like new again.
Tomorrow i'll put some pics of the completed rebuild bike.
Thanks
Christian
