I am a complete noob here, and hello to everyone in the forum.  I have a 1983 xl185s with no wiring on it period.  Can anyone tell me what I would have to wire to just trail ride the bike. I think someone was planning to try to convert it to a mag. type ignition and removed all the wiring.  Thanks for any input.

I'm sure that '83's are AC alternator ignitions.....which means you run a wire  from the alternator    to the coil primary with a branch to the points and you be good to go. Sometime today I will verify that it is a AC ignition. Chuck

PS: To shut the thing down, you will also need a branch to ground thru the key and kill switch.

Well, I did a fairly good search for your specific year/model wiring diagram.....no luck! I don't think any XL's had a CD unit, but could use some help on that from other members. I am posting a diagram I use. Coming off the alt/mag, the black/white wire splits to the coil primary, points, kill sw and ignition switch.

prior to firing the split is grounded thru the points, is grounded for kill and grounded for 'key off'.

The 83 185 is a CDI ignition. Black with red stripe from stator goes to black with red stripe on CDI box. From CDI out is; black with white or black to kill switch, black with yellow stripe to ignition coil, blue with yellow stripe and a green to blue and a green of pulse generator and green to a good ground on frame or motor. Hope they didn't take the CDI box as that's NA from Honda and I see CMSNL has a price of 182 euro on them. CMSNL has parts fisches on they're site with wiring diagrams. Pat Orman.

I re-read my last post and must clarify something that does not read as well as it should. The points ground the AC output as it builds towards peak voltage and they open as it peaks (ungroundig it) and the peak voltage is applied to the primary. This is a weak spark during starting but works much better during run. Chuck

Yeah, the 80s vintage XL's no longer had points, so you'll need to go with the CDI wiring description...

Good luck with it,
