As every XL owner should know the 74-78 has 3 seperate 6v circuits:

Points/coil
Head Light
Tail light, battery, gauges and brake light.

So this weekend was the first real-world use of the newly restored XL350.  Being a total beginner my wife road it very slow in second. She would often forget to turn off the trun signals.  I noticed throughout the day the neutral light would get harderand harder to see. By the end of the day it did not work at all. I checked the conection at the stator then took it for a ride up to 7,000rpm and was able to charge up the battery and get it back to normal.

The next day it behaved the same with her riding it.

Has anyone seen this? If you ride for an extended period at low RPM it drains down the battery like the stator output on that circuit is not keeping up?

Yes, thats the way the older bikes work.  The electrics don't produce a high wattage.  If i ride my '83 CB1100F below 3K for any time it will run the battery down.

Thanks! One less problem to work on. I have never seen this on a 70s KZ. Guess I run the RPMs regularly and the street bikes have a much larger battery.

Got to replace a few parts from her dumping it on pavment. There goes the origional front brake lever. :)
