I had a '75 head rebuilt and it came back with what looks like spray paint on the cam journals and lifter cover surface. I assume this is to protect the exposed metal from oxidizing. How does one remove this coating?

Coating? That's bizarre.. In all of my 20+ or so years of working on cars, trucks and bikes,, I've NEVER had a "coating" on cam journals... I'd start by visiting the rebuilder and asking them if they know what they are doing.. If it's just paint, get it out of there; otherwise it'll wear loose/come off and add to the crap in your motor's oil. And, I hope they did not bead/sand blast your entire head,, on some surfaces that's okay but others (like journals) it'll actually increase the clearances,, maybe even too much/sloppy.. Good luck.

Good lord, I looked at it again and the bastards bead blasted it. Argh! I had my local Honda motorsports service shop in Leesburg, VA do the work a few years ago. I thought I was in good hands, Oy. I guess they thought rollers went in there. At least I hope that is what they were thinking. Lesson learned. Only trust shops that specialize in vintage bikes. The cam fits snug but I'll see what happens when it heats up.

If the cam does not spin freely in head and rocker box[bolted together] Things could get really distastrous. Pat Orman.

Snug? Like Pat said, make sure it spins freely,, any little bit of friction you feel now will be multiplied hundred fold as the rpms increase.. Time taken now will pay big when you get to ride it later.
