Well, I've given up cigarettes to fund the salt habit, and things are moving along smoothly. The FZR head and barrell lost No4 cylinder,(Yamaha's loss, Honda's gain)the water galleries and oil returns have been plated, the crankcases are nearly finished their stay @ the welders shop and will be decked soon (its a "laydown" engine now.aka ct110 style), the crank has been modified to take the FZR rod (slipper big end bearing), the piston (FZR) is booked in for a ceramic crown coating, and I've contacted a friend who'll balance it all for me.The FZR cams have been shortened, with2 ofNo3 cyl's lobes being reduced to a 23mm circle where the oil seal will run , and the other 2 lobes are gone, leaving a 22mm camshaft extension to be used with outrigger bushings which will double as the oil feed to the cams. The belt pulleys are on their way from Gates, for added "bling"CDI ign is on the wish list (Boyer Bransden,,$700,,ouch, with adjustable rev limiter and special coil)Dunno 'bout it being ready for 2008's timetrials, 'cos I need to build a new frame yet, and source some better wheels, and speed rated slicks,,and so on , and on,,,,,,but,,ya never know? 'till ya try.Tiny

I'm off to Lake Gairdner in less than 22 hrs
But,,,,,rain has been falling from the sky over most of eastern Australia this week, including 1/3rd of my local annual rainfall falling here in 20 hrs, delaying our loading a bit, and it is like pea soup outside this morning.
So far,,,the rain hasn't been close to Lake G(spot),,but it IS forecast this weekend, and later next week

It' will be a scramble to get a run in before the weather turns sour, and 150 entrants all with the same idea, it will be "interesting" to say the least.
Because the last 100 miles to the lake is dirt road (track) , too much rain,,and we get stuck 'till it dries out, a lot of rain and the pits get unreachable (thoughts of two little Hondas slowly getting swallowed by the salt come to mind)

At least we won't die of thirst (12 team members,,,80 dozen beers)

Re:DOHC 161cc LSR project update

I just got home,,,LONG hard week,,,,,I'm smelly,,worn out,,but,,,,,,
We struck rain 15 miles from the lake and nearly lost the ass end of the ute once on one muddy corner,,arriving at 4pm sunday only to discover the lake was wet at the access point, and from the track 0 mile (start) to the 2 mile mark,,no racing for a couple of days ,,,,,which made it officially beer o'clock.

By late tueday morning we were allowed onto the lake to set up camp (the bike scutinneering was done monday , and once the remaining cars had been checked, and the competitors meeting was over, racing begun on both the short (3 mile) gps course, and from 1/3rd mile before the 2 mile mark, 1st timer at 3 mile, then at 3 1/4, 4 mile,5 , 6 and 7 mile, which suited me and the young lad who rode the 175 XL I built, giving us 1 1/4 mile to gain full speed, rather than 3, which is really difficult to judge where to hit WOT in top and not melt or break anything before reaching the timed sections.
Cec (my friends 16 y/o son) had a run down the GPS course (only top speed recorded, no records ) to see how long the XL took to wing out, and what top speed it'd do, but as he had a 10 mph tail wing,,it was only a guide.
!st run,,,,,84 mph !!!!!!
he then lined up on the long course,,,10 mph cross wind,,,,76 MPH,,,stealing my previous class record of 71 mph.
Wednesday
He run long course again,,same wind,,,,77 mph (@ 9000 rpm)
I got a run,,,after a 5 hr wait,,,,,
Left the start well,,,,11,000 rpm in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th,,,forgetting which gear I was in for a bit,,and tried for top (again?) and found it,,too hard a change,,clutch slipped,,I buttoned off momentarilly, hit it again, it was fine,,but I was struggling to get over 10500 rpm, and as I went past the 1st timer,,,BANG,,,I was hit by a violent gross wind which litterally pushed the bike 10 ft across the track, front wheel 1st, then back wheel, then front again,,SHIT ! thought, braced for the worst, freaked at a shape I saw on my right side,,but realised it was the reflection of my nose in the visor,,lol, by then I'd passed the 3 1/4 mile timer, getting a speed of 78 mph,,which was not what I wanted, but still a record.
Thursday
More wind, we discussed the XL's gearing,,and power band and decided to go one tooth up on the countershaft sprocket, and see if it would pull it ?
YES ! It did !
84 mph @ 9000 rpm !, another record
While Cec was waiting for thisrun, I put my son on the CT and sent him down the test track in my leathers, with a belt to gather in the loose cow hide (he's MUCH more aerodynamic than me)
He had two runs, both up and down and when I called him in,,he informed me he had pulled 11,200 rpm in top !
As he had not completed his licencing pass, he could not run the bike on the long course,,so I franticall looked for Cec' dad to ask him if Cec could take my CT on a run,,and after dad saying yes,,Cec was asked,,and agreed, but never having had a ride on the bike we run over to the test track to let him test it , things were ok, but he was a bit savage on the gear changes, resulting in clutch slip,,,,his name was called to go up to pre-stage on his bike,,so I lined up 21 one vehicles behind him, hopeing he could get back in time to ride my CT,,,,,,,
Well, he did,,,with 5 minutes spare
At the pre-stage we all wated nervously (it was worse that actually waiting to get a run yourself)
He finally was ready to ride next in line,,the wind was changing, and dropping,,,LIGHT TAIL WIND !
Then the car in front of him dropped its innards @ the 2 1/2 mile point,,,track closefor inspection,,and to wait for the vehicle to be removed,,,,,,DAMN,,,
Then , the track was given the , the oil was off the track to the side and Cec was off,,,I listended to 5 purfect gear changes,,and heard if sing for 4 miles, (I had told him NOT to go over 11,500 rpm)
But,,,,apparantly he did,,after nailing it just before the 3 mile,,,he noticed while passing the 1st timer,,he was doing 12.000 revs !,,he buttoned off, held it on 11.500,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
87.2 mph ! @ 3/4 throttle  a new australian A/F 175 record

Swiss,,,your pipe designs are THE BEST !
Thank you HEAPS !
Tiny
PS theres a 1 gig video of the entire run , all the way back to the pits(right hand,,oil pressire guage, and mile markers flashing by) I'll unload asap

Way to go Tiny!!!
I knew that with some luck you could keep it together and get a good run.  Glad to hear that you also beat your old XL175!  HA!HA!  Get some rest and lose some weight so you can get those numbers next year.  You will have to run a better top speed yourself to keep the record going!

Swiss

Brucifer, I am just about to release the programs that I use to build/spec my pipes.  I will let you know ehn they are available.  I have an old XL350 side port here at the house but it will be mid summer before I can look at building a pipe off of it.  I just have too much going on right now.

Put me on your customer list Swiss, our team has a few projects coming up,,a R1 powered lakester,,a cbr250 powered sidecar,,,,,,,,,
My bike would have handled another c/shaft tooth with ease with the young bloke on it,I we had time (1 set of sprockets shared between 2 bikes) and possibly run 93~> 95 as it is, so the "TON" plan should be possible with the right aero package,,and NO WAY am I gonna loose weight,,lol

This post is not really in the correct place,,but on our way home, we passed through a small town called Wilmington, pop 100 or so, and on the outskirts saw a ford 2 foor coupe parked in a property on the outskirts of town (these coupes starred in mad max 2, and are getting rare)
We called in to ask the owner for a closer look, but he informed us it had been sold 1 day earlier, but he was a nice old fella, and he showed us around,,,damn,,,,what a museum he had,,,42 fords,,ford trucks, massey ferguson tractors, chrysler utes, sedans, ford utes and sedans, all laying around a 5 acre flat, some under cover, most not.
He then took us into his garage,,I was stunned,,,TWO,,mint condition SL 350 twins, one green, one partly obscured by its cover,,it got more exciting,,under covers,,a pontiac trans am...and two  70's corvettes !

You never know where you might one day find this kind of stash !

Yeah Bruce, most are for sale (he had sold 5 coupes) , whaen asked if he'd sell the SL's he replied "I hadn't thought of selling them" which, to me meant,,gimmee a price, and I'll make up my mind.
My son WANTS 'em,,lol.

Re:DOHC 161cc LSR project update

It's been a while since Iv'e posted an update, but things are progressing well.
The engine has a gut full of new goodies including a custom Carrillo 'rod

The conrod(3mm longer) enabled me to up the compression ratio to 15.5 / 1 ,which the methanol will love
. The rod ratio is now 2.28 / 1
Hopefully , this combination should enable me to "safely" pull 12,000 rpm next year without dropping it's innards onto the salt.
To help keep things in place, I'm making an engine strap out of 3/8" staninless steel bar, anchored to the upper rear engine mount, and the footrest mount castings under the engine, and tied into the front engine mount casting, ending up over the head where it's reinforced with some 1/8" Stainless plate, between which sits a 1/4" "H" bracket tapped to 8mm x 1.25 which will allow me to apply an extra 15 ft/lb to the head, via 2 countesunk head allen bolts kindly put there by Yamaha (for no apparent reason?)
I'll post some pics of the completed setup once its finished.
Work has also started on a fairing nose cone mould (taken from a voodoo jet fighter wing tank), and that is taking a LOT of work, but it's almost ready for a "buck" mould, but then there is the middle and back sections to design / build.
I might try shortening the primary header by 4" to take advantage of the new red line too, but I'll run it as it is to get a feel of the new comp ratio 1st.

Wow, that is a bunch considering that your AU $$$ is worth almost as much as out USA $$$ is these days.  Thinking about $450 just for the custom rod itself.

Long time no post, sorry fellas, thanks OZ for helping sort the problem.

Speedweek 2013 is on here next week & I'm more than a little excited !

Unfortunately, I wont be on one or the XL based projects this year, but I'll be riding one of those filthy 4 cylinder bizzos

Has anyone have a XL/CB125, and a 185 conrod laying around ? I'm interested to see if the 185 rod is longer than the 125 rod, 'cos I'm thinking of replacing the stroker crank from the CT145 , with a stocker, and running the like in the 125 class one day, but need to move the head 3mm closer to the crankcases, or fit a longer rod, as the current crank has 6mm longer stroke than stock
Anyone wanting to see some blown 4 cylinder 250 porn, look here

Happy newyear fellow Hondroids

Tiny,
Wish you the best in your endeavors! But what ever you do keep the tiny XL updates and photos coming! I stand in awe and admiration of your engineering efforts and accomplishments with the project! Great reading! Maybe if I stare at it all long enough I might even learn something!

Good Luck!
