Sparklz,
Here are a few shots of my 76 XL442 done up in the earlier 74 colors!
Special thanks for inspiration, guidance, and encouragement to the late Pat Orman and Swiss! Also the many members of Oldrice site! Hope it can find a place among the special builds here!

 David

David - this is a really cool build. Can you tell us a bit about the frame and running gear. Cheers RR

Appreciate the compliments,

The motor is a 442cc combination that Pat Orman put together, 89mm piston with a long Vesrah rod. The camshaft is one Swiss had from his early years of XL builds and is based off of the camshaft Bill Bell used in his early Baja bike builds. The head is slightly cleaned up on the ports and a long time friend who cut his teeth with an old NHRA Super Stock/Pro Stock racer did the large valves, 33mm & 29mm along with the spring set up. The motor was built for torque from off idle to ?? The thing revs to the moon! 38 mm mikuni feeds it the VP C16 fuel it has an appetite for. A Pat Orman wound stator with one of his CDI adapter kits fires it all off.

The frame is a modified XL250 frame. The complete back half was upgraded to thin wall moly along with relocated upper shock mounts. Hand made aluminum airbox, aluminum swingarm designed along the lines of a Thor unit, lightened cushion drive hub, titanium rear axle and swingarm pivot bolt attempt to address the weight issue. Currently the bike weighs in wet with no fuel at 238#. I have an early RM125 fuel tank to replace the steel TS unit and hope to hit my long time target of 235#.

The front end is off of an early XR500, with modified damper rods. Suspension front and rear is right at 9" and seems to work well, though some improvement would be acheived with a set of emulators in the forks. But overall I am quite pleased with the handling.

I have roughly 30 plus years of welding and machining experience to fall back, or over, on to that enabled this build! I now longer am in the field so this gave me a chance to tinker a bit. This bike was one I often dreamed about while drooling over the C&J and KSI bikes of the 70s.

A special note of thanks and appreciation once again to this site for insperation, Pat Orman and Swiss for their experience and willingness to tolerate the many questions and sometimes off the wall ideas! But most of all to have had the opportunity to call them friends! Look forward to the new friendships and knowledge on the horizon! Thanks to all who participate!

David

Sparklz, by the way the third one would be my choice!
