It's just an idea right now but I'm thinking we should try to get together once in a while. What do you think? Mid-Ohio in July? Fall Rally in the Ozarks? Nevada? Late Spring in Sterling Heights Michigan? What do you think? I see a picture on the XL Page with all the XL350's lined up. Very cool.

Since I already travel to Mid-Ohio every year, that would be my choice, but I will try to go anywhere east of the Rockies...

I personally have never been to Mid-Ohio, but have wanted to make it.  That would be a good oportunity for those of us w/comp bikes to race the vintage events.  Most of the guys I ride with, won't turn there head for a "souless" Honda.  It would be nice to muster next to the Penton Owner's Group tent:-)  Clint

See www.midohio.com for further details.

This years marque is MV Augusta

Dates are July 28, 29 & 30 (Fri, Sat & Sun) 2006

I *highly* suggest you check the site for details on the admission prices - they vary depending on what you want to do. Camp - tent, RV, etc,...

I *HIGHLY* suggest look into getting a room at a local hotel in Mansfield NOW as there will be NO rooms available if you start looking into it a week or two before the event. I AM going. BUT I will probably only be there Fri night and the weekend as I plan on working Friday normal hours.

I plan on it anyway. I plan on meeting some of you there. I plan on riding my XL350 all around the compound. Or the AJS. I plan on it.  Gonna be there???   Swiss? Pat? Brucifer? Motosportman? Dorkpunch? Bo? ....bueller?

I will be arriving early Thursday morning to help in the setup for the Trials on Friday...

I will be in my usual camping place in the northwest of the camping area up against the woods...I will be serving as a checker this year in the Trials...(sitting for 10 min at a time behind 35 2strokes in a tight little creekbed is not my idea of fun...)

Ha! Hey, we all have to do our time. I'd like to be there to get a pic of that for the archives. Maybe another XL member can snap a few pics before I get there.

Hey Geoff! I'd like to go but it's just to far for me. I know it's nothing for frequent fliers like yourself but I'm not a flier. That's kinda strange because I really like WWII era planes. I flew one time in my uncles home built "experimental" two seat tandem rear engine big wing in the back "Vari-Eze" plane, that was enough for me. If you could schedule something closer like in California, Oregon or Nevada, then it would be possible.

Geoff, I think I'm the only one left in SoCal that still rides the XL's other than puting to the store. If anyone ever wants to ride out here I'll set it up. Desert, mountain trails, Pismo Beach dunes. How about riding the old Barstow to Vegas trail. Or the Greenhorn Enduro trail. Or Gorman with the mountain trails. The people out here have the new bikes and when they see me coming they part the waters. But the old XL does good.

Coere Delane? Where's that?

I'll be at Mid-Ohio (Lexington Ohio) this year for the Vintage Motorcycle Days - July 28, 29 & 30 and I'll bring my wife - but NO KIDS! Yipee! Prolly both the XL350 & the AJS too. I'm trying to get my brother to go also as he'll be on my dad's old XL350. This is gonna be a hoot!

Guys, it looks as though my brother won't be able to make it this year. He's been informed he's going back out to sea again. I have a hotel room reserved, my wife is on the fence about it and my daughter probably won't go. If they go, I'll keep the room. If they DO NOT go, I'll probably ride the KLR down and camp. I don't know yet. Either way, I WILL be there.

Re:XL Rally

The clock is ticking!   - ok, I have a room at the Mid-Ohio Motel (no joke!) and I MIGHT be going all by myself now. Which makes me wonder if I should keep the room or ride the KLR650 down, camp and just cancel the room. Unless someone else wants to share a room or camp or has any other ideas? I can't afford to take the truck with my XL in the back although I may do that anyway (CHAAAAARGE!). We'll see.  It'll take 2 1/2 hours in the truck and since most of it is super-fast-super-slab riding the XL350 would probably turn me into a skin crayon unless I took an alternative route and left the day before. Ha!    So Murray, is anyone else going to Mid-O this year or is it you and me again?

I guess it will be just you and me again...their loss...

I will be getting there early on Thursday to help with the Trials setup and will be "staking" a claim to some camping space for myself and some honda folks from Cleveland in the Northwest corner of the camping area against the woods...say the word and I will try to rope off a little more...

And since I will be registering as an AHRMA racer, I get an extra cold pass...and since it only seems to be me and you going...

Re:XL Rally

Sorry for the late reply Murray,

I was there. I rode out late Friday afternoon on my KLR650 with my brother-in-law on his KLR650. We rode down superslab most of the way to Findlay on i75 then rode east to the hotel from there on a couple Ohio hiways. We stayed at the Mid-Ohio Motel just south of Lexington. There were other KLR riders there too with a couple Katoom guys thrown in for good measure. One guy rode in on a very old NSA (?) that looked like an old BSA. Weird bike and I'd never seen one before. Rode out to the track early Sat morning and wandered around there most of the day. Took in some sights, met Gary Nixon, watched races, dodged the sun as best we could. There's something to be said for the Frogg Togg Cool Cloths. Soak em and wear em. They last all friggin day! Awesome for keeping cool on hot weather. Ate at the local Mexican establishment (the name escapes me now) and sampled a few beers, good food and great company. Basically the same the next day but around noon I had to bail for home. My brother Gerard headed to Cleveland from there so I rode back alone. It was so hot though, I had to stop at the local Gander Mountain in Mansfield and bought a Camelback. *Really* glad I did too. Made the ride back much better.

I saw a few new things this year - a wheely machine where the bike is mounted to a trailer thingy with straps to the front of the bike and the rear attached to the trailer. You could nail the gas and lift the front end (a late model ZX10R Kawasaki) and basically climb all over the bike while the the bike screams for the sky. Cool. Visited the MV Agusta display and walked around the swap meet area for hours. Missed seeing the real trials competition but I heard it was good.

This was kind of an impromptu visit as up until the day before I was so totally NOT going to this event. Funds and family issues have been keeping me too busy lately to do anything much less take off for a few days. Not to bore anyone with sad details but we've had to deal with more deaths in our family since my dad passed away, lost my job because I chose to spend time with my dad, got another job, laid off from that one, got another job, laid off from that one. These last two years have really sucked for us. But I'm glad I went. Currently working for Macomb Powersports (www.macombpowersports.com) selling bikes. Sorry I missed you Murray. I *WILL* see you next year. I hope to meet others from this board there too. That would be great.

DUDE!

We're a pair ain't we...?

Hope the new job is working out...I'm kinda jealous really, being around motorsports toys all day...which reminds me that I am going to need to purchase an ATV soon...any ideas...?

Like I said in the other posts...it was so hot I could barely get myself out from under the shade...

Hmmm...maybe AC...

We sure are Murray!   A pair of what I don't know but we are for sure.

Hey, Lets start thinking about a national XL rally - at Mid-Ohio VMD this year. I think it would be awesome if a whole slew of old XLs dominated the place! Wouldn't that be cool?

Hotels - camping - an area somewhere dedicated to all the old XLs - imagine a small sea of old XLs and all of us standing around talking about them for a couple days.

Even if it were offsite at a local Hotel parking lot or something. Any way - I think it would be good to get all of us together in one place at the same time. At least once!

I could arrange for some small swag stuff, maybe t-shirts, and help with the arrangements. NOW is the time to get hotel rooms for those that want to go that route.

Waddya tink?

Hey Geoff...

As always, I will be there to help the B&J Crew put on the Trials and will be camped in the extreme NW corner of the campground...

I already claim an area for myself and a family of honda drivers from Cleveland, I can always claim a little more...

although for a "Rally" type of thing, I would be willing to meet in the middle somewhere

BTW...I want to say PJ once mentioned Gallatin, TN. I remember it was close to Nashville, not far from some of the Trails places I go...

Awright, I'm looking into hotels now - like tomorrow morning so I can find a nice cheap one with a whole floor available for us that want to hotel it. I'll reserve a few rooms but I'll probably camp it this year. Everyone wanting a room - contact me before you get your room and I'll see if we can keep everyone together in one hotel. I'd like to see a large group of old XL's riding around the VMD this year.  That would be cool.

Well...the latest word that I have says that the "crew" from B&J may not be setting up the trials event at mid O this year, but I will still be there most likley getting in later on Thursday afternoon, but also, since I will need to register as a rider in the Trials (thats the cheapest way to get tickets) I may wind up with an extra cold pass...we'll see...

Geoff...

It is indeed my friend...

I will, as ever, be arriving at the track on Thursday, am and setting up camp in the northwest corner of the camping area. Looks like I will be signing up to ride the trials this year, unless AHRMA decides to ask the B&J crew to set up the trials after all (ugh...I hate sitting in those creek beds with all the 2-smokes...) which also means I get 1 extra cold pass for the weekend (if anyone is interested and needs it...I also have the option of purchasing a third for only $10.00).

I have been in touch with Pat O (who attends the Dirt Track stuff anyway) and I might have talked him into coming over to the big track for a visit on Friday during the Trials...and then back over to Ashland for the Dirt Track later...

Gonna be FUN!

Re:XL Rally

The suspense is killing me. Seriously - Every year the beginning of March my alarms go off to start looking for hotels, camp sites, and generally make arrangements for the upcoming Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio. Getting bikes ready to take to the event is another whole path dedicated to this event. So far, I have a room, two XLs ready and one smaller SL for my daughter *almost* ready. Anyone got a cheap set of side covers for an SL125 laying around??? Last year I rode the KLR650 down and back and had so much fun. This year I don't own a truck anymore so I'll be either driving the fam down in the econo-metro-micro-transpo-van (with or without a trailer/bikes) or just ridng the KLR down. Wife and kid say they want to go this year. Cool. But the only real reason they want to go is because they found out my hotel has an indoor pool. Heh, I know where they'll be the entire weekend.

You know where I'll be the entire weekend! WOOHOOOOO!!!!   oh, and this year I WILL meet you ! ! !

Yes Sir Buddy!

Since I am camping (and riding...) my plans are pretty much set...

do to some dead-beat clients,  the XL won't be ready in time so I'll try to borrow my friends XR650L for local transportation...

Any and all are welcome by the campsite Friday morning for coffee and butterflies and the chance to laugh at a fat guy riding a TL250... I'll try to post some pics once it's cleaned up for the trip...

I still have a free pass (with my Trials registration...) if anyone is interested...email me for my cell number...

Sure hope to see some of you there...
