As some of you know i have been working on my old 79 XR 500 that had issues after trying to adjust the timing chain. The motor came out & the rocker box came off. Newer rockers will be put in as old ones had plating problems. The motor was out of time & Im currently trying to set it. I just cant get it . It seems to be either 1/2 tooth advanced or 1/2 tooth retarded. But not right on.  I am setting it with the rotor (T) alligned with timing mark on the case inspection  hole & im trying to align the 2 marks on the cam sprocket parallel with the machined surface on the head.  no dice. either  abit advanced or a bit retarded. Its currently set parallel to the machined surface while the rotor (F) is alligned. I 1st thought the timing chain tension may make a difference so is set it. No difference. Any help or advice.
Thanks

The chain can stretch and not work well or the tensioner can also wear out. The chain is much easier to get. There is a way to measure it but I dont have my book handy.

My book mentions how to measure chains for the rfvc motors but no mention of the 79-82 motors. From what i can see the adjuster is different  from thje latter 83-84 motors.
